Improving Firefox Retention

Dutch spreadfirefox users

Posted by Up North on Thu, 08/02/2007 - 07:17Improving Firefox Retention

Dear fellow Dutch Firefox users,

Apparently a lot of you use Hyves

We also saw in the new (and old ) XiTi figures that adaptation to Firefox in the Netherlands is one of the lowest in Europe. As a fanatic Firefox spreader living in Finland you can understand that on this point I am a not so proud Dutch guy.

So a few questions arise to me right now:

1) Why is adaptation so low (high msn usage for sure, lots of illegal windows copies?)
2) Who here at sfx is Dutch (and what are you doing to spread Firefox?)
3) How can we "infiltrate" Hyves and tell people about Firefox, take away prejudices, and not be to forceful?

Internet usage is high in the Netherlands, Firefox usage is not. Please do not let our fellow Dutchies suffer!

and this is just one example of a needed localized strategy, now that Firefox is mainstream in some countries... Are there other countries out there with similar problems?

Let's do it! And thank's for the feed-back

Marco

Overcoming muscle memory—how do we increase Firefox retention?

Posted by jtbatson on Tue, 06/12/2007 - 23:29Improving Firefox Retention

To date, Mozilla has done a reasonably good job getting people to download Firefox, but our data shows that a very high percentage of those people do not become long term, active Firefox users. We need to figure out how we overcome the default behavior of “clicking on the blue e.”

This obviously is not just a marketing challenge, but one that the whole company (and broader community) must face head on. To this end, we asked for an early round of ideas on how to improve Firefox retention. Below is an edited version of that feedback. What do you think? What are we missing?

Firefox Retention
Some high level questions:
How do we make Firefox people’s default browser (in choice and in practice)?
How do we make people “own” their browser and make it more personalized?
How do we change the habit of “clicking the blue e”?

Understanding our users
Segmenting users to understand why and how they use the internet/Firefox
Understand our user touch points along the user life cycle

Product
Improved and more sticky start page
Better auto-updating process
Icon/name on desktop
    -“get on the internet”
    -Fx in start menu
Focus on security
Make plug-in finder much easier (Windows media player, flash, etc)
Window that pops up if you haven’t used Fx in a while
Partners as a retention tool (ebay, kodak, joga, google)

Personalization
    -add-ons
add ons contest (for people who download—not develop)
    -themes
    -personas

Brand
Security (in product and general messaging)
Brand campaign around thanking users of Firefox (and a tell a friend link)
Message benefits of open source and mission of Mozilla

Support
Firefox support
-support as a way to turn people in to evangelists—after all support requests, say “you were just helped by a Mozilla volunteer, get involved today”
    - feedback loop helps tell engineering, qa and product what doesn’t work before people tell us in the exit survey
User Education “tools, tricks, tips”

Evangelism
Mozilla store as retention tool
User groups and community events (college reps, etc)
User Parties (more than just 1 for Fx launches)
Community as a part of retention
-    get people to sfx
Email newsletter with combo of cool blog posts, tips and tricks

Thanks for your help!

Maybe if websites totally endorsed it?

Posted by Free short URL ... on Tue, 12/11/2007 - 04:57Improving Firefox Retention

To start, I love Firefox. It's all I use (except when testing, the other browsers of course) when surfing the web!

One thing I have done is unequivocally promote Firefox through my short URL service, whereby I have made the extension / plugin to make a URL from any web page available only in Firefox (mostly because I enjoy Firefox and endorse it fully, also because its a pain in the ass to make it for IE).

If you want to see what I am doing, take a look at http://shorten.ws/ both in Firefox and Internet Explorer.

My site is ranked top 16,000~ in Alexa, so hopefully this will get some installs for the Firefox community :)

How do I add a FireFox button?

Posted by FreeAdLists.com on Sun, 09/30/2007 - 16:06Improving Firefox Retention

I want to add a big FireFox button to a forum I operate. However, I'm not sure what file to modify. I'm using a vanilla version phpBB 2.0.21.

Permissions for Updating

Is there any way to make it so firefox updates and plug-ins installed while logged in as an admin on Win2K systems can be put into effect for another user that does NOT have admin privileges?
