continuing with my idea to spread the SFx (spreadfirefox) community, I've done a screenSaver that shows the downloads in a different way.

The idea behind is to reach 1 Billion downloads (now is a bit more of a quarter of billion) and show it as a full Firefox logo.
So far if you leave the screensaver running, it shows just 1/4 of the logo as only 1/4 of a billion has been downloaded as per today (11/Jan/2007) and this quater of billion is slowly uncovered by squares (the data collected is transformed into squares, each square represents 200,000 downloads)...

flash analogue clock and download counter

it has a little animation to show the number of downloads, has an analogue clock and a link to the download page.

Im not too happy with the rollOver as at the moment nothing happens, I might add sound and replay the number animation as it happens too fast.

Any comments, feedback, ideas, etc, are very wellcomed

I think it would be a good idea to have a graph showing the evolution of the download counter : we could see if firefox spreading is a x->exp(x) or a x->log(x) (I hope not...)

Yesterday, when i went to sleep, the download counter was at 141,766,4xx... (xx because rising too fast)

Today, when i woke up, opened the computer and looked at the counter, i couldnt believe my eyes.

159,7xx,xxx!!! and growing, 200 downloads per second.

18 MILLION DOWNLOADS IN 18 HOURS!!?

then... i noticed the new update. People really do use Firefox!

Firefox Speedometer

How about using the download counter to create a speedometer?

Basically, you read in the current value, wait a set period of time then read it again. You then display the difference on a speedometer dial.

Should be pretty easy in Javascript I'd have thought.

Firefox Marketshare Graph/Counter

Since there will be lesser downloads (because of automatic update with the upcoming release) the download counter may not be that interesting. What would be exciting is the Firefox Marketshare Graph. If a single graph does not give a good idea across different kinds of sites, we will have separate categories like general sites, tech-related sites, etc. (yeah, country-wise charts as well).

I know there are some good efforts already. It would be better if we integrate all of them and show a single percentage or website category-wise percentages on SFX.

What do you think?

Button and Banner Counter

Is it really that hard to create an affiliate Button and/or Banner that includes the Firefox download counter?
Isn't there some advertiser somewhere that's already done this so their code can be looked at to figure out how it was done?
Maybe I'm naive but it doesn't seem like it should be too difficult to do this by all the coding geniuses that hang out here.

When it reaches 99 million, my website will be showing "Missing nnnnnn to 100 Million Downloads!!!"

And we could think of an script to show a javascript alert once (using a Session mechanism to show only once, not to irritate) if the visitor gets to the site from
100.000.000 to 100.000.999.

The number without commas

The new format of xml file brings the number wonderfully naked ( without commas, ready for calculations).

BUT a good web designer would get it "naked" with JUST one script instruction like:

number = number.replace("," , "");

The number is too big to be exibited without thousands separators.
I had to add commas/dots to make it a bit more readable.

Pardon me, but I think you made a mistake modifying the number format. The old way, with thousands separator was good both for displaying and calculating (just one line of code would remove the ",").

Now, in order to display, people have two choices:

Or they exibit this "confuse to read" number with 8 digits long
Or they RE-add the commas with a special function for it.

Please if you modify the number format, post a blog in the homepage, so that the counter users get informed.

The feed has changed

Firefox Download Analyzer

Hello! I created an analyzer program written in PHP that tracks the number of downloads each day. This information is then used to create a very pretty line graph and calculate other statistical information. This includes estimated milestone dates, which shows an estimate on what day certain milestones (100,000,000 downloads, 250,000,000 downloads, etc..) might land on.

I just started the project a couple of days ago, so not that much data is collected (only about 10 days so far.) I plan to keep this up on my website as long as I can.

Mac Dashboard Widget
