firefox benefits, and drawbacks...

hi guys, for one, i love using firefox, have been for the last 2 years, however i've noticed a few things... both good and bad...

1, for the good side, firefox does protect you from the spyware and bull that decides to annoy you every day of your life... can't say the same from msn obviously lol...

2. they did introduce the tabbed idea. great for alot of reasons... do i even need to explain why?

3. been the most smoothest experience i have ever had in 6 years of using the net... and that says alot :P

bad though...

1 and by far the biggest, cus it follows IE with it... lost bookmarks.. i don't have them at all, and this isn't the only time as the heading first suggests..

2, it still locks up like IE.. i can't expect the program to be perfect, but even with upgrades, it's temperamental, and my system can handle what i do to it so it should handle the firefox well :P

sadly i count the bad side of 1, as 2 points, cus firefox has always been better, and yet they found a way of following good old bill gates... wonder if they bribed him... i had alot stored away, and i'm in a very bad mood cus i cannot remember 9/10ths of what i had in the favourites...... oops........ bookmarks folder........

i wanted a better experience, and i seem to have found a double edged sword.... i don't expect it to be perfect. it's still my favourite explorer, but why follow good old bill gates????????

at least get it right where the bookmarks are concerned.... i really hope i can find mine...

firefox v IE

3 months ago, i never use firefox, for no one use it during my classmate and friend.

When i graduate , and work at a e-commerce company ( www.uxcell.com ) all of computers use the Linux system and firefox, at the beginning , i feel unaccommodated with firefox.

3 months have gone, now i can't leave firefox, and not like to use IE, i think firefox more convenient with IE, such as book mark and can open many pages in one interface.

MY Bookmarks are Gone! Thanks Firefox ...for NOTHING!

I never considered myself a computer wiz, which my be the reason why I like the K.I.S.S. Method (keep it simple stupid) The other day like any other day I happily logged on to my comp and started up firefox. The first thing I notice different was it did not take me to my home page. instead it started asking me to set a default user. Hmmm i thought to myself...is this some kind of up grade? Well I did what I was told ...BAD IDEA! now I have a brand new firefox without the 120 bookmarks I spent the last three years collecting and organizing. Just a few bookmarks that lead me to buy cool stuff for mozilla that I don't need or want. (kinda like the new firefox or whatever it is that happen that dreadful morning) Thanks mozillia for every day I'm without those bookmarks I loose bucket of money and now I have pleaty of time on my hands to do more fun stuff; like restore my computer, try and hunt down all of my contacts and bookmarks and most importantly look for a NEW WEB BROWSER!

You have know idea what sort of pain and suffering one can cause by not leaving well enough alone or not thinking through your upgrades properly. If anyone has any idea of what happen , and How I can get my old firefox back with my bookmarks please please I beg you, let me know.

thanks

VA

3-4 years later, no Spyware using Firefox

I help set up a computer for my computer illiterate uncle 3-4 years ago and did not have contact with it again until last Friday. When we bought the computer, I installed Microsoft defender, spybot, and spyblaster on them to help keep away spyware. However I knew that these programs would eventually become impotent because I knew he wouldn't take the time to update them regularly. I just told him to click on the firefox icon whenever he wanted to use the net instead of internet explorer to hopefully cut down on spyware infections, until the next maintenance session with me.

Just last Friday I took a look at his computer for an unrelated problem. This was the first time I touched his computer in 3-4 years. I checked his Firefox version and it said version 1.08!!! ( I imagine that I installed an earlier version of 1.0 series and it updated itself until 2.0 was released) Wow, thats was a long time ago wasn't it? To my surprise after running larvasoft ad aware for spyware. I found none, just ALOT of tracking cookies, but no unauthorized programs. Granted he wasn't the type of person to visit porn site or what not, but I said that 3-4 years of holding down the fort against spyware is simply amazing taking into account all anti spyware programs including Windows Defender Beta stopped working a long time ago. I must also note that his Norton 2003 stop updating because of subscription status a LONG time ago also.

Thus, when Firefox said no to spyware, it meant it, even with an old versions of Firefox. I think his computer would have exploded from spyware without my maintenance for 3-4 years if he used IE though..LOL Go Firefox!!!

My Firefox story - all because I went to an MS seminar...

Well, other people here seem to be sharing theirs so here is mine.
I work in a mixed MS/Novell/Unix environment supporting systems written in MS languages, running on MS operating systems and using MS database engines for data management. They were - and still are - just a tool to do a job as far as I am concerned; if they were run on Unix systems written in Java with a MySQL back end it would require a different skillset, but you get the idea. They are just a means to an end for me.
Personally I've spent money on Microsoft software, books, certification training and exams.

At that stage my opinion of MS was that they did what we needed, they weren't ideal but so what, they worked. IE 6 at home and IE 7 at work were my default browsers.

I went to a seminar earlier this year about Microsoft future development and the latest version of Visual Studio and .NET 3.5. Their people were waxing lyrical about everything and how brilliant it was.
Questions from the audience relating to non MS software and interoperability were quickly skirted around - apart from when they were able to mention open standards and interoperability in the context of their current or forthcoming products.

I came away with a feeling that despite what they said, they were trying to increase vendor lockin (possibly due to an increase in use of open source and free software) and really didn't care about what was happening to other companies, unless they were interested in buying software written by MS.

This felt uncomfortable to me, I really didn't want to get further sucked into reliance upon tools and technologies under the control of a commercial giant whose only real interest was getting money from people willing to pay them.

A few months later I went to one about developing applications in MS Office. I do this a lot already, I went to this because I need to think about moving them to 2007 in the near future. Their opinion was basically that VBA was dead and new development should be done in a .NET language, preferably C#. Yet to do this, you need to buy Visual Studio and VSTO - cost approx £1500. Why would anyone do this when the VBA editor and help files are included out of the box in your office installation?

I made a note that evening to see what was out there, installed Firefox at home and have never looked back. I installed it at work the following day. So far I've found three at work that only work in IE, found bugs in a piece of commercial software at work that was only uncovered by running it in FF and posting contents of the page to the W3C HTML validator (currently with the vendor's helpdesk to fix).

I've found that its a lot faster than IE and seems a lot more secure (have even uninstalled IEtab to get "failed to invoke Internet Explorer" out in case they find a way around that) on a few sites.

These so called "open" protocols such as LDAP that Microsoft use I've tried using tools against eDirectory servers and found that they don't work - because MS have twisted the format of the results slightly.
Slightly off topic, and I've discovered its not possible to do LDAP authentication over SSL against an AD domain controller - ie credentials pass over the network in plain text, so be warned anybody doing this.

In combination with the other items such as the result of the MS antitrust case in Europe (and their response to it), plus muscling in on territory owned by other companies and writing software for "obsolete" systems (Silverlight player for Windows 98 - pardon), I'm now seriously looking at means of minimising use of Microsoft controlled technologies as much as possible for both myself and my employer.

And all because I went to a Microsoft seminar to promote their own products.

Since then I've also installed OpenOffice but its not progressed quite so far because I'm not yet a master of programming OpenOffice apps.

I try to spread firefo on my site/community (not informatic subject) and... it's work!

On my community (a fan club of a musician) we are trying to spread firefox...

We made guide to install firefox, to chose and install extension, explaining why firefo is better exc.. (you can find the post here: http://www.freeforumzone.leonardo.it/discussione.aspx?idd=673731 )

And in every page of the forum and of the site (www.mjj.it) we had the firefox logo and link... and on the new version of the site (online next days) we will have a HEAVY message for all the IE usuer :-)

I think this works... because in italy the penetration of firefox is 15-16%
but on my site/community, the penetration is 25% of visitor and more than 40% of view page

(IE is 70% of visitor and 54% of view page)

you can find statics here http://www.forum.mjj.it/stats/admin.php?action=os_browser&

And we are not a computer nerd community!!!

foxfire & ftp

I have been using Firefox for about 6 months. I find it to be much easier & better to use than IE.

However, a couple of people that I have been trying to convert to Foxfire have a problem/question about accessing ftp sites using the browser. With Internet Explorer, we can type in the FTP address and access the FTP site. With Foxfire, it won't allow access.

Any idea how we can access ftp sites using Foxfire, without having to have separate software?

Thanks,

Dan

Use Firefox, Portable Edition now!

What do you think about Firefox Portable? Well, for me its pretty good because you can bring it anywhere with your iPod, USB Flash Drive, CD and other storage devices. Since I used it, browsing with Firefox is even more easier because you can bring it wherever you want, without even installing the whole thing to your PC!

FireFox so much better for flash game sites

I run a game site with flash games and FireFox just works so much better for the popup game window.

It's neat and fast and there seem to be no issues with the errors that IE can throw up at times.

I think it is so preferable that I've added a FireFox button to the site.

chery
WWD GAMES - the BIGGEST little GAME site on the NET

After much frustration with the IE browser and AOL's so-called security edition I finally gave Firefox a chance. My daughter said you were the best and now I'm a believer too. Thanks!

How I got saved by Firefox

I always had problems with IE. I got my system filled with spyware and virusses, causing the whole system to stop working correctly so I had to reinstall Windows all the time. From that moment I wanted to know if there were any other browsers, so I searched with google. There I found a link to a browser called Mozilla Firefox. I installed it on my system and ran it. The first thing I noticed was the utility to import IE settings and files. Then the user interface loaded, and it looked really refreshing.

I was playing a bit with firefox, until I came on a website that needed Flash. So I thought, oh no I have to go to the website of macromedia, download and install flash on my system (much work). But then I saw the bar "Plugin needed, Install plugin". I clicked on it and it installed the plugin directly. I didn't even had to restart the browser! I was totally amazed. From that moment, I never had any malware on my system. So I actually got saved by firefox.

I'm also recommending other people to use firefox. I even preinstall it on PCs that I build for others.

I shall use firefox for ever! :)
