Let's give the Fox a name

Hi,

There's a bug in Bugzilla about Firefox's mascot (the Fox) not having a name, here: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=250592 .

In an effort to solve this, I'm working on a website that will allow users to submit name proposals, vote for existing ones and comment about them.

Currently I've the design mostly done and I'm going to start working on the programming, (OpenID will be used to login).

Well, what do you guys here at SpreadFirefox think about this? Since I'll need your collaboration for this to be successful... :)

Enlightening university administrators?

Loughborough University Computing Service recently (November 2007) put out a notice warning about "serious vulnerabilities" with the Firefox browser, and suggest using Internet Explorer instead.

It seems very misleading talking about "serious vulnerabilities" without specifying what they are - and surely, rather than asking users to switch to Internet Explorer (and losing the many benefits of Firefox such as better integration with academic reference tools e.g. Zotero), it would be better to give users a choice by offering two supported platforms?

Any suggestions about enlightening university administrators?

Link: http://www.lboro.ac.uk/computing/news/firefox-0711.html

Full text:
"Are you using Firefox as your browser? Do you really like tabbed browsing?

Tabbed browsing will be available to all Staff Desktop computers from Monday 3rd December 2007, as Internet Explorer 7 will be released as an optional application, with full central support and centrally managed security - one less thing to worry about!

If you wish to continue using Firefox, please note that serious vulnerabilities have been recently reported. We strongly recommend you "Check for Updates" on the help menu, and make sure you are running the latest Firefox Mozilla version: 2.0.0.10.

Computing Services will continue to provide advice on Firefox and other products we know are in use around the University on a best efforts basis, but if you would prefer to avoid the hassle of securing risky software on your own workstation, possibly risking the integrity of your own data, then we would advise you to run with fully supported software on the staff desktop service. From Monday, Internet Explorer 7 will be a fully supported Web browser.

Regards,
Computing Services"

Using Coins

Has anyone thought about using FireFox coins?

It could be something similar to how the military hands out coins as a token of appreciation or for a job well done (top referrers). They are extremely durable and a keepsake. Besides that, I think the FireFox would look really cool on them.

FreeAdLists

Spreading Firefox With Eye Candy

Yes there are many ways to promote Firefox and this is one has proven to be effective.
I’ve been a long time collector and creator of Mozilla artworks and back in early 2005, I started providing Mozilla fan art to visitors including wallpapers, icons, screensavers, and other graphics and they have all become popular download choices on my site.

I’m also a member of deviantART.com where I aggressively promote Firefox with art media like wallpapers, icons, extension features, and customized ads that are designed to look more like mini pieces of art.
deviantART.com hosts more than 30,000,000 pieces of artwork of all media types from paintings, 3D art, wallpapers, Flash games and more. There are also over 4.5 million members and while I don’t have official numbers (I’m working on it), it appears that the majority of users use Firefox. This is an assumption but there are so many artists pages with Firefox promos on them, and Firefox as an art genre is highly popular.
You can find themes, extensions, icons, wallpapers, splash screens and more.
I have many friends on the site and the majority of them use Firefox with their ages ranging from 13-65. Awesome isn’t it.

In my gallery you’ll find many pieces that are specific to Mozilla graphics including some shown here. An example of an effective marketing method that I’ve discovered is that it is easier to get a person interested and excited about Firefox is you can introduce them to it through cool graphics. Banners and buttons are cool graphics but I find it to be a much better idea to get someone to put a 1600x1200 wallpaper on their monitor for all to see rather than an 80x15 button on a site where it’ll get lost visually. It’s like comparing a billboard to a bumper sticker.

The other plus is that if the graphic is decent and appealing enough, non-Firefox users will actually download Firefox graphics and use them. It’s inevitable for them to at least become curious about Firefox and check it out all leading to a potential new end user.

Create some Firefox art no matter one what kind and everyone will like it and share it giving Firefox even more deserving exposure.

Squash
Feel free to use this on your site, blog, forum, etc.
Right click view image and save or drag to your desktop.

mozillacons
Mozilla computer icons and PNGs for Mac, Win, ObjectDock etc at 128x128 and smaller.
Click on the image for the download page

Widespread Fire
This has some fine details that can only be seen in full view.
Sizes are available from 1024x768 up to a whopping 4096x1536.
You should have no problem finding a size.
Click on the image for the download page.

Blaze Me
This is my favorite. There’s potential for a lot of tag lines for promotions here. Put the power of Firefox in your hands etc.
Sizes 1024x768-1600x1200. Resizing should be fine.

Ken

Here's a screenshot of the "blue" homepage. There are also the colors "Green, Red, yellow, and pink" to chose from. I'll update when I need to :)

screenshot

Lets vote to get Firefox installed as default on Dell PCs

Hey everyone!

I has been proposed that Firefox should be installed as the default browser on new Dell PCs and this could be a really neat idea (and could potentially nudge other companies to do the same if the idea goes through).

http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/62245

You'll have to register with the site but it seems worth it.

Mozilla Button Mania

As a huge fan of all Mozilla related products and graphics, I’ve created a set of 110x32 Mozilla related buttons for web sites, blogs, or to hang on your walls.
You can download them all in a single 97.6 KB .zip and the whole package is going for just $19.95 US dollars. Alright, so I made that up.

Please keep in mind that the logos are all protected Trademarks, with most of them belonging to The Mozilla Foundation.
There may be a couple of names/products that you are unfamiliar with, so I’ve provided the links to each one and you should definitely check them all out. Enjoy them, trade them with friends, collect them all, get them while supplies last.

Hi folks,

just launched a website www.firefox4life.com with a stanford team that is trying to highlight very cool Firefox add-ons in a simple, easy to download way. would love feedback as well as site traffic -- from this community and those you'd pass it along to.

thanks!
