Points Earned

Posted by Skemcin on Mon, 12/13/2004 - 21:12SFX Design Issues

I searched the forums and could not find the answer to my question, which is:

Is there a way for me to find out how my XXX number of points were earned? Is there a list of users that are associated with my affiliate ID?

It would be nice to see who these people are so I can meet and thank them.

Thanks in advance.

I only have 18 - maybe I would meet and thank them. The sites that I put my link on are for very localized businesses. So, yes, I might be inclined to meet the individuals that I have turned on to Firefox. We are still humans and many of us still like the "personal touch". This site may be one big virtual water cooler, but the world can be much smaller than you think.

I am insulted by your immediate willingness to dismiss the value of a referral. Granted, your whopping 5,000+ referrals is wonderful and I'm sure you are proud of it. But I am equally, if not moreso, proud of my 18 points earned. Please refrain from trivializing my accomplishments!

Hi,
We don't have any such info available at the moment.

Thanks for your support!

Thanks for the reply. I know there are many things that others may feel are more important, but a report of referrals (points earned) would be interesting feature to add to uour accounts.

Thanks for any consideration SFX may take.

I don;t mean to be rude, but you want to track all the people who have clicked your "Get FireFox" button? I thought half the point of firefox (and its ilk) was that we can surf the web assured that we are NOT being tracked?

Maybe I dont understand how the point system works, cuz I've not seen where it is explained anywhere. If its just a simply counter, then no, it would be crazy to track that. But I was under the assumption that you get a point not just for referring someone to the site but for actually having that person register here - that is how affiliate programs I've dealt with work. If my assumption is incorrect, then I don't mind at all retracting my request - but I would change it to suggest that the program be called a referral program and not an affiliate program.

Hi,
You get points both for getting people to sign up and for refering them to download Firefox.

I could add a request that you be notified, if the new member so permit, when a new member signs up that you have refered to the web site. You could however also do this =by just asking people who download via your links to contact you and share their experiences.

A suggestion, would it be possible to earn an extra point if the referred visitor downloads Firefox?

Now that I am clear on the fact that points are earned by site referrals and by referred new members, its easier to specify the concept - thanks for the help Björn.

I'm ok with saying that it would not be a good idea to track points earned for plain site referrals. But, I do think that it would be nice to see a list of New Member referrals along side the referral URL. I could see the beginning of a conversation starting with, "Hello XXXX I am the webmaster for XXXX. I noticed you have visited the site and made the switch to Firefox . . . ."

I understand that this maybe a little too narrow of a concept to be worth the time to code, but it would be something I would check often. I feel that it might even contribute to the first or a more expansive use of the "buddylist". I kind of see it as an easy way to make common ground with someone as well as an obvious way to bring a communty closer together.

Having never received a welcome message when I joined, I feel fairly removed from the community. My life simply doesn't permit me to spend a whole lot of time surfing the SFX site (although I'd be happy to devote more time).

Björn, any consideration you take is enough for me as I appreciate the time you've taken to respond to my post. I look forward to your response.

Talk to you soon.

Hi,
I'll add a request for that feature to the queue. I would also like to know more about the issue that you did not receive a welcome email when you signed up. I will start a thread to see if other people have received any of those. As for me, I don't remember if I received one or not ;)

Hey, I found some time to dig through some e-mail archives and I did eventually find the initial welcome message. Since it was caught in a spam filter, I had never realized I that I had received it.

Thanks again for putting the request into queue.

Happy New Year!!
