Start a "Spread Thunderbird" site and/or add it to this one.

Posted by Sharkscott on Mon, 12/06/2004 - 21:54Thunderbird Marketing Ideas

We should start a "Spread Thunderbird" site or add it to the "Spread Firefox" site. Also, compile all the press and reviews it has recieved and ask people to write in more. This may be old hat but what about revamping the Mozilla logo? Maybe Firefox should become the name chosen to carry the flag, so to speak. If Firefox is the hook then lets use it to promote the Mozilla foundation and all of its offerings. If Firefox is the one extremly popular piece of software in the Mozilla family then you should change the name , instead of "Mozilla Firefox" it should be "Firefox". Its called I.E., not M.I.E. So, thats my two cents worth, what do you think?

SpreadFirefox.com is for thunderbird too, but mostly Firefox.

More than a year ago (I think) one sfx user started a spin off from sfx. I participated there a bit and also others from here.

I think that the creator tried to get some support from Mozilla, but Mozilla decided to focus on Firefox instead (to my recollection).

I think Thunderbird can be spread best by offering it packed with lightning (calender) and focus on business users. Question is: is this the place.

If you do make a serious attempt (to me forums is not the way to go) then ask Mozilla again if it is ok...

(all this according to my opinion, do not want to kick any chins here...)

Now that google allows customized @domainname.com with gmail, I could really go for this idea.

An Internet usage tracking solution

I'm running Thunderbird for my Gmail account, and I think it's nice. I think the website should be made because Thunderbird isn't as popular as Firefox, and should be. Outlook Express 6 sucks...

I too have setup my gmail account in TB but when I realized that gmail does not download the spam to your email client I stopped using Thunderbird.  Why, you ask do I want spam?  Well, its not that I want spam, it that 1% of the time when gmail incorrectly labels something as spam and I don't get it until I check my webmail account.  I also notice for some strange reason when I send gmail from the webmail interface, I get a copy in my INBOX in TB.  I had to set up a filter so it would get moved into my sent instead...

From what I can tell there is no way to let your spam pass on through or even turn it off for that matter...

I still recommend it for people using an email account from their ISP -- I have not seen an ISP keep spam on the server...

oh and one last thing you have my vote for making a spreadthunderbird site resembling the spread firefox one.  I can't see how it wouldn't reinforce the brand and make it stronger... it's like Word and Excel.  Two very different programs but they get used together a lot...
not so (yet) with Firefox and Thunderbird

The Spread Firefox site should have a download link, it's kind of weird that it doesn't. It'd be easier for those who visit this site and don't have Firefox to download it.

I agree about the branding part, Firefox alone would be the best.

good idea all around i think. just to let you know tho microsoft have changed the name of internet explorer for the v7 release to windows internet explorer (i read somewhere anyway). i use thunderbird and some way of communicating how much better it is than OE is a great idea.

Personally I think it's a great idea. Not only it would increase public awarness of Thunderbird but also it would get more developers and designers to make more extensions and themes for Thunderbird since there are relatively few of them at the moment.

I'm all for a Spread Thunderbird site and also a public download counter like the Firefox one. Thunderbird marketing needs to be improved.

...someone knows where is possible to submit some thunderbird's button???

I don't think it's a good idea to hang everything that follows on the Firefox brand, just because it's successful. Thunderbird is a brand by itself.

The advertising gurus tell us that line extension is a recipe for failure. I.e., when the manufacturers came out with a cheaper version of Cutty Sark, it not only failed as a product but also diminished the premium value of the original brand.

Read Al Ries and Jack Trout's book "Positioning: The Battle for your Mind" to learn more about the evils of line extension. Proctor and Gamble never do it. Each of their products is a strong brand in itself.

Agree. Especially 'cause Ff and TB were created for different needs, browser and email client. I.e., marketing stuff simply can't be the same.

Submitted by angie on Mon, 06/06/2005 - 07:13.

i agree, there should be a seperate Spread Thunderbird site.

line extension isnt necessarily a pathway to faliure. but thunderbird and firefox are different products (and therefore arent on the same product line extension).

Submitted by brianburnham on Wed, 12/08/2004 - 21:31.

By strict definition, Thunderbird is not a line extension. If we created Firefox4kidz as a kids browser, that would be a Firefox line extension. Thunderbird is more accurately defined as a complementor to Firefox.

I don't see any danger here, as Ff and Tb are independent entities. Now positioning the new Netscape prototype as an extension of Firefox would cause exactly the problem you are talking about (unless you like the new Netscape).

That's correct, FF and TB is actually two separate, stand alone products. Marketing must be based on that fact so we need to build two brands here. Two more or less identical home pages (Spread..) is exellent, makes identity, and there is a brilliant way to promote the other.
Separate they are perfect, together they are brilliant.
In the end, one must of cource not forget the other Mozilla products. Maybe a new Mozilla Products Portal is a track???

I notice www.spreadthunderbird.com is active and linking to the Mozilla Thunderbird site. Could we run two spread projects with unified login? Thunderbird, the perfect companion for Firefox.

Anthony :-)

Yes, That is a great idea, two sites, similar layouts, unified logins. Cheat Commandoes!, Rock, Rock on.

sorry

As I already said in the newsgroup I am going to start the Spread Thunderbird. Just have to get Mozilla accept. For now, one Moz. champion told me to do it.

Submitted by Queen Lioness on Mon, 05/30/2005 - 14:04.

NEVER MIND

you can get $9 a year domains from yahoo, and they'll provide you with 5 email adresses

Your other option is onesite, which is $20 per year with first year free. Also, 5 emails

if mozzzila doesn't make the spread friefox and spread thunderbird boards communal, than go to invisionfree.com. Perfectly custoimizable.

Now, another good idea is to get a graphics program if you don't already have one. I recommend photoshop or printshop

I'll be happy to be a volunteer for the spread thunderbird team.
