(As with all marketing ideas, this one is best understood if I kind of "pitch it"...)

I think that anyone who has worked with computers, at home, at the office, at a friend's place when they invite you over for a few drinks and then speak those words dreaded by computer-savvy people the world over "Hey, you know about computers, right? Whilst you're here can you look at this for me?" knows the pain of having a computer blow-up on them. Not so much any physical pain, or the financial pain (we both know that it is a good excuse to upgrade to the latest and greatest when replacing the old bomb).

The pain I am specifically speaking about is when you have to search high and low for all of your install disks, your licence codes, your list of websites to download the tools which are just a part of the virtual office/study/workshop which your computer has become. And then, after installing everything (and the ubiquitous Micro$oft Updates and Reboots) you finally get somewhat close to a workable baseline. Then you have to remember all of the Add-Ons and Plugins and others which make a "passable" set of tools something far more powerful.

What if, instead of downloading the FF core application, then installing it (agreed - a fairly straightforward practice) and then sourcing and installing each of your plugins and themes individually, you were able to, from one page, download the whole bundle in one go?

So, instead of going to 37 different pages/locations to rebuild FF as I am using it now (1 = FF Core, 28 Extensions, 8 Themes) I would go to one page, select the extensions I want with Checkboxes or the like, and then hit Download - Once!

Extend the idea further - Imagine being able to save these Bundles (either through a simple URL format, or through storing them on the actual server) and then share them with friends, family, or the world! So I could save a Bundle which is specifically cut down and lean just for basic web-browsing to send to my Granny (also making it easier to test and walk her through the install and troubleshooting down the track), and I could also create a Bundle with all the Web Development Plugins I use and then share that with new workmates.

I know that there are licenced variants of Firefox which are being used in Corporate environments around the place too (my workplace used FrontMotion, although I prefer my Portable Firefox, personally), but even there it would be again possible for someone supporting IT within a company to have a Pre-Bundled version they could either get from the Mozilla Servers, or store locally, in a single package, for anyone to install/reinstall from.

I think the customisability of Firefox is a great thing, and I don't want to have that change - I just know that, with the shifting userbase and more and more "Ma and Pa" users coming into the FirefoxFold, allowing that slightly higher level of customisation (at a Bundle level rather than at an Add-On level) might well help them take advantage of some of the great work of those Community Members who have been doing their bit to extend Firefox.

Thoughts? Counter-points? Support?

I like the idea, it's kind of recommending Firefox as "My Firefox" for others to download, complete with all your recommended add-ons.

Technically it's not too hard to do, all we'd need is a bunch of volunteers to trial and administer it, any takers?

Well, it would be silly of me to make a suggestion like this and then not be willing to put up my hand to assist in anyway I can. So I would be happy to help if this idea gets off the ground.

I was poking around my old Firefox links, and found FireMonger. It shares some of the same concepts of the idea I mentioned above (download FF with a set of Add-Ons and Themes), but it doesn't allow that same level of customisation and personalisation.

Happy to see that some like-minded individuals see value in this idea.

A way to be able to download several add-ons with just one click would be great for existing users too, especially if it were dynamic.

A whole new era of blogging about everyone's favorite sets would ensue...

A dynamic page with a few already made bundles and the ability to add/remove items would be great!
For example, the user could choose if he wants the executable and if so, platform and language, sets of add-ons or specific add-ons from those sets.. yeah..it sounds good!
There's so many add-on lists on the web, even lazy people like me would try some more if there was an option to get all the useful ones at once!
I've done something similar using the FEBE and CLEO add-ons to produce single .xpi files for all my favorite extensions and store them in a usb stick so i don't have to install them one by one on friend's computers but it would be great to have such a system online, accessible any time you want and with all the latest versions at hand!
