Need to watch Microsoft Office Online closely

Microsoft builds their Web applications for Internet Explorer, usually optimized for IE, and sometimes exclusively for IE.

An online version of Microsoft Office needs to be compatible with popular browsers, Firefox and Safari and the pressure needs to be put on them (by us) to make sure it happens.

Honestly, I really don't think we have to worry about it. Internet Explorer versions 6 and 7 were the best things that ever happened to Netscape / Firefox. Windows Vista was the best thing that ever happened to desktop Linux. Everything Microsoft has been doing lately has been great for the competition. Let's just sit back and watch Microsoft screw it up one more time.

Of course, you know darn well the entire thing will entirely use Win32 binary ActiveX controls. So not only will it be for IE on Windows only, but it isn't even a real "Web" app.

Congratulations Bill, you just re-invented client/server, just using web protocols as a transport.

Sad thing is that just because it looks like it is inside a web browser most people will believe that it is "web".

I say don't even use Microsoft Office. Too much support of Microsoft has brought us such abominations as Internet Explorer and everybody's favorite punchline, Windows Vista.

Use and support the free alternative, Open Office, to make sure Microsoft doesn't seize even more control of the office market.

It is wise to subscribe to their site from Firefox... Just to let them know.

Microsoft has never won a war in development against anyone. But it proved to be master of marketing. Don't repeat the history. Don't downplay the marketing.
