3 Browsers, One enemy

Posted by LIJI on Tue, 09/25/2007 - 13:40Spreading Firefox

What is the common thing between Firefox, Safari and Opera?
All of them are Windows browsers which are directly competing with one enemy, called Internet Explorer.

The shared goal of all of them is to beat IE in order to make a better web using standards.

But one thing keeps the browsers away from their goal - The users.

Imagine this situation:

Jonny is using IE. Jonny is interested getting Firefox in order to replace IE. Jonny is talking with Matt about getting Firefox, while Matt uses Opera. Matt tells him about some week points of Firefox and why Opera is better and such. Jonny changes his mind and talks with Tim about getting Opera, which does the same thing but with Safari. Jonny gets confused, imaging that all 3 browsers are bad and sticks to IE.

All browsers lost.

What am I trying to say? Firefox, Opera and Safari users should support ALL 3 browser in order to reach their shared goal.

If someone asks you about Opera, don't say "Nooo! It sucks! Use Firefox because it's much much better", but say "Opera is very good, Yet I still prefer Firefox".

Another thing that I believe should be done is the developers of the different browsers helping each other improving their browsers, making them even more better than IE. They should be less competitive and more supporting in order to beat their shared enemy - IE.

Please remember what I said in this short article, or you will hurt both Firefox and the other browsers, letting IE win easily.

I've just Google'd the name of my article and realized how famous it is.
It was even mentioned in Arabic and Japanese sites according to Google.

Thanks for everyone for spreading my idea of the 3 Browsers and the one Enemy and making it have a great and successful influence on the Web. :)

I started to use IE as it is standard in the windows package. After a while I got Opera to check the compatibility of my website with other browsers and was surprised by the easyness and extra features of Opera. As third party came Mozilla Firefox, to cross-check how my site would look in a browser that gained popularity very rapidly. In no time it became my standard browser, mainly because of its near-correct handling of what is agreed by the W3C.

And that's  what really counts. No browser should be allowed to roam the WWW unless it follows the guidelines set out. Not even Firefox, their makers and site-makers are 100% errorproof, but it's not far off. (for example : below this box I type in, "Formatting Guidelines" allow <b> and <i> where those should preferably be formatted using the "style" element...)

I cannot agree with the phrasing used in "3 browsers, one enemy". It's so hateful. If you don't like IE, don't use it, that's IMO the best way to show Microsoft that their product sucks. What really has to be countered is the monopoly Microsoft has and their unwillingness to comply with rules set by a third party. Microsoft may not be allowed to rule the (www-)world.

Hi all,

Me and my friends run a website called gurugeeks.net and the main focus of this website is to create awareness towards Web Standards... And as a part of verbal campaigns we have run in certain events in India, we're seeing people understand the requirement and importance of web standards and we have seen certain schools adopt firefox and opera in order to teach proper web coding practices to students.

I think this is a wonderful move towards proper web standards...  And as far as the war goes, I'm with Opera on the Anti-Trust war it has started against IE.

Chao...

The Cruise is on....

But do you think that the developers of IE are copying the coding of Firefox even though it is illegal?

STAY AWAY FROM IE PERIOD!  IE is tied in with the OS!

Here is some truth I want to share to everyone reading this, look down at your toolbars (down where the start button is) and if you  have "Quick Launch" toolbar there, and many do, this bar is part of internet explorer.  God knows what Microsoft has been doing with any information (even if it's just to see what people use, and this would be a good way to do it and I believe they have).  Think about this!

Uninstalling IE from any windows os doesn't entirely uninstall it.  I still use the quick launch, but maybe I should do away with it.

Another thing you will notice is that many of the online anti virus scanners will only let you scan using IE!  What the hell is this all about.  You can visit my page on this at http://nicemachines.com/maintenance/

I haven't tried it lately, but the last time earlier this year I tried to use these online scans, same thing, you needed IE.  Guess what.  In the beginning of this year I uninstalled IE using the control panel (even though I know it didn't really get rid of all IE) and just used the other browsers mentioned here and I even turned off my firewall for the hell of it and guess what?  I haven't had any trouble whatsoever!  I do run a program that empties some folders I choose every once and awhile (temp, cookie, prefetch  folders)  NO PROBLEMS!

My evaluation of the whole mess with anti virus and spyware was all done with IE!  STAY AWAY FROM IE!

And I tried to remove IE7 but IE6 will not work after, since the "forgot the KB update but it removes the IE icon off the desktop" *yay*, I just deleted all the IE shortcuts, broke it by removing 7 (6 will not open at all, option gone, even from security center, but it's locked down anyway).

Remember that joke about the M$ update that removed IE? Fingers crossed and I keep praying... alternatively linux does that nicely.

Submitted by JustZisGuy on Wed, 11/21/2007 - 13:41.

If these "free" virus scanners did things the right way they would offer the scanner as an installable download that any browser could get. It's not like it would even have to be a separate version, it could contain the exact same binary ActiveX control that it is embedding in IE but with it's own container to make it a proper application.

Do these online virus scanners still even work in newer versions of IE or on Vista? There is no way an embedded control like that should ever be able to get access to your computer's files. I would think that to run, the user would have to turn off all their IE security (what little there is) - which would then be a prime way to GET infected with crap. DUUUUHHH. But then perhaps that is the intention of these sites.

ActiveX on the web is pretty much obsolete anyway (The 1900's called, they want their web site back!)

Submitted by LIJI on Thu, 11/22/2007 - 09:40.

Exactly.
It's just a silly ActiveX (aka Win32 PE file) that runs for a web browser.
Obviously, installing ActiveX objects is an extremely insecure action. The anti virus could be a virus itself!
And even if it's not, you'd probably have to turn off all the "security" options in IE (Not sure about that, Never touched IE7 or Vista and hopefully will never do) which is an express, one-way ticket to Virusonia.

And of course, since Firefox (Or any other real browser in this case) doesn't "support" this "feature" these kinds of antiviruses will never, EVER work with them.

The best solution is to just get a real anti virus! ;) (I'd recommend NOD32 Btw)

You're a bit confused here...
The Quick Launch task bar toolbar is part of Explorer.exe, and not iexplorer.exe. It is correct that they're somewhat bundled together but XPLite (A software that can uninstall IE) can "de-bundle" them.
Personally I've made a successful attempt of fully uninstalling IE.

Even the shell icons are now Firefox's logo (Yes, the ones in Shell32.dll. I res-hacked it) and typing an address in explorer.exe would open it in Firefox. There's no way to launch IE because it does not exist. Even the IE ActiveX used by some programs asks me to save the HTML file to my PC instead of rendering it. Yet, I still have the Quick Launch toolbar (Although I hide it because I don't use it.)

Would this mentality be why Mozilla is now offering Wiis as a prize for putting up giant Firefox stickers? Wii uses a stripped down version of Opera, you know.

Submitted by LIJI on Wed, 10/31/2007 - 07:00.

Wii doesn't include Opera by default, you download it (Or buy it by now, I bought my Wii a few months ago so I got Internet Channel for free) later from the Wii Shop channel.

Mozilla aren't hurting themselves when they're doing it as they support Opera in a market they can't join. (I don't see Nintendo making another browser for the Wii based on Gecko)

It's still a good thing to see Mozilla supporting their "rival" and I would really like to see it happening  in the other way too. :)

In fact, that's the exact philosophy behind my site, The Alternative Browser Alliance. Every Firefox vs. Opera flamewar is another win for Internet Explorer.

Submitted by FenFirefox on Mon, 10/29/2007 - 03:04.

I will be honest about opera and firefox.  I notice a slight speed difference with opera being faster than firefox.  However, opera base is even smaller than firefox thus its add ons and customizing are extremely limited; so I use Firefox a majority of the time because I love the add ons and customization.  I also find firefox more user friendly with automatic updates and so on.

However, I use Opera when I look at "educational" material because some of those sites outside of the US for some reason block firefox access, allowing anything but Firefox to view.  IE is out of the question especially for those site, so opera with good security is a must for those situations.  So yeah...........I said it.  I said I was going to honest.

Why is there even a rivalry between those two browser?  I find them both exceptional with Firefox being my personal favorite.

Submitted by MichaelBuckley on Sun, 10/28/2007 - 06:43.

What make me really dislike IE is the bad experiences I have while designing web sites.  I could forgive it for not supporting everything I would like it to, and then having all its own formats.  But what I do have a problem with is all the unexpected things that it does for seemingly no reason.  I have wasted so much time trying to patch a page to work with IE.

It is the lowest common factor problem, and IE really does bring that down.

Submitted by ottodv on Sat, 10/27/2007 - 22:05.

Opera, Safari, and the other so-called "alternative" browsers are certainly not our enemy. Anyone who uses a non-IE browser helps keep the web open and free. It encourages websites to be made for all browsers, it encourages the use of standards.

Again, it's not exactly an advantage, but a marketing technique.

The only advantages that IE has is that it can run Microsoft Update and that some applications (Symantec Update, Quicken) depend on it to run. Otherwise, no.

Submitted by LIJI on Mon, 10/29/2007 - 21:52.

Those are not an advantage. I can make a program that requires Firefox installed (Or the Gecko ActiveX) or a site that only works with Firefox. does that make Firefox better? No!

I tried Safari but its not much supported by all web pages, it gets rejected from many sites I visit.

But all in all, Firefox still has the juice I need and Opera spices up the day, what more can I ask!

I do have IE7 as my backup but that is because when downloading updates from Microsoft using Firefox is gave me some error message. Well now thats all changed due to the IE tab plugin. Of course, if I happen to use Firefox, I'll stick with it until it closes, then go right back to using Opera. My usage habits are very weird.

Personally, I have used every one of these browsers and they all have some benefits but like the rest of you my favorite is Firefox. The amount of customization and support available is just overwhelming. Not to mention I can take my Firefox with me thanks to Portable Firefox, so I can use it anywhere at any time off my USB drive. But if someone said I like Opera, or Safari I wouldn't have a problem with that. But to all those IE user's it's always going to be "Why do you still use IE, there are so many better choices out there whether it be Firefox, Opera, or Safari".

Submitted by NotDoingThisAnymore on Sun, 09/30/2007 - 18:56.

And true!

Firefox is my primary, Opera is my backup. I love them both in their own way but Firefox is my prefered. Like a litter of really cute kittens, they're all gorgeous but there is always that one you just bond with.

I am not really keen on safari, but if someone says they use it, I don't feel any angst.

It is, when someone says "I use IE" most (if not all of us) cannot help that Sid Vicious sneer or that slapped with a wet fish look.

I remember in the beginning, I was speaking to my new tattooist (also a tech head) about it and asked which was better, IE or Fx, you should have seen the look of his face! A look of horror shot across it "Don't use that, don't do anything to it, just hide it away and forget about it and use Firefox".

Quite and for those who come and read here (not mentioning any names as I don't flame, unlike them) then either misquote OR use quotes on their site from some of us angry ex-IE users (who have lost time, money and maybe our mind because of that terrible, rubbish, *other words* browser) we are glad to have found a free and much more exquisite / superior browser than the peice of garbage we used before. So if I want to swing my Mozilla tamborine... I will!

The only browser I ever bash is IE.

When talking about browsers I generally focus on Firefox otherwise I may confuse the person I am talking to. Some people have a hard enough time grasping what a web browser is more or less that there might be another, better, one.

I'll gladly mention Opera or Safari if they are interested or if one cases where another might be better. Safari can sometimes be better for Mac users, and Opera is sometimes better on old slow computers (I'm not talking about the new slow Vista ones)

Let's say there was another fable by Aesop called "The Tortoise and the Two Hares." The hares (In this case, Firefox, Opera, Safari, etc.) challenge the tortoise (IE) to a race, but during the race itself, the hares instead dare each other to do other things, such as jumping over a rock, or climbing a hill. All this time, the tortoise just plods on, and finally wins the race.

Apparently Opera Software has decided file suit against Microsoft for monopolizing the browser market. This is probably due to Microsoft bundling IE with Windows. It seems that Opera is fighting for us because they want Microsoft to bundle IE and competitor's browsers together including Opera but probably also including Firefox. I've seen many articles about this issue but PCworld has been more thorough about this issue.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,140573-c,internetexplorer/article.html

It's time for the browsers to unite against IE and Microsoft long history of monopolizing the market.

P.S. Oh anybody know why my IE7 crashes right when I click the exit button and then Vista attempts to "rescue" it by restarting it? Oh nvm, I don't use it much. If I absolutely have to, I use Avant. I know about IEtab but that addon becomes a bit unstable when loading activex controls, probably because of IE7, not Firefox.

Hmm...  Let me see, MS makes Windows, MS makes IE, they sell them in the same package - that's illegal?  I think I'm missing something here.

As much as I dislike the bull in the chinashop, I have to keep reminding myself - the bull OWNS the chinashop.

It's certainly good to have alternatives, thanks to Mozilla & the others, MS is forced to continue to 'try' to improve their products.  Just think, it provides employment for thousands. ;-)
