Made for Firefox first!

Today I saw the following message (at the bottom this page  http://otsing.delfi.ee/m.php ):

"Tutvu kaardirakenduse uue versiooniga siin (hetkel töötab ainult Firefox brauseriga)"

Now I am sure you probably only understand 1 word from that sentence, so here's the translation (more or less):

"Get acquainted with the new map implementation version here (currently only works with the Firefox browser)."

This is a popular map application here in Estonia. Ain't it cool that a version for Firefox is developed First!!!

This really does show how far Firefox has come, that it is the easiest browser to develop for and in short that Firefox IS becoming the standard!

Starting with Firefox is always a good move.  It's got great standards support and tons of developer tools.  (Firebug, anyone?) As long as you take a standards-based approach, it's easy to adjust it (usually only minor changes are needed, if any) for Opera and Safari, and it's almost always easier to adapt standards-based code for IE than it is to adapt IE-based code for Gecko, Opera, and WebKit-based browsers.

Of course, those advantages are lost (other than the dev tools) once someone decides to stay with a Firefox-only site.  I'm encouraged by the presence of the word "currently" in the message, and hope that the map service will soon be available to more browsers.

As a web designer, I generally find it far easier to get things working in Firefox, and sometimes use PHP to block code from IE, just because it gets its knickers in a twist.

The only problem I've run into with firefox is when using flash - setting the window mode to transparent stops any components from working in Firefox, but not in IE! :(
