Four Hundred Million Firefox Downloads

Posted by sfxteam on Fri, 09/07/2007 - 19:38Spreading Firefox

On November 9th, 2004, you all started a movement. Spread Firefox, supported by tens of thousands of contributors, took just 99 days to deliver 25 million downloads of Firefox to a world of people desperate for a better Web -- a Web that didn't overwhelm them with pop-ups, a Web that didn't infect their systems with viruses and spyware, a Web that was fun again, simply put, a Web that worked.

In less than six months, you all doubled that number to 50 million downloads, turned open source into a household word and reasserted the supremacy of choice and simplicity.

It took the Spread Firefox global community of activists only one year to reach the 100 million downloads mark and to let the world know that innovation was alive again on the Web.

And just one year ago you all helped to double that number again, to 200 million downloads. More than 50,000 of you, with Spread Firefox buttons and banners, not only helped Firefox achieve an amazing download milestone, but you all helped to make Firefox one of the world's most recognized and respected brands.

Today, you all have done it once again. With your amazing efforts, Firefox has reached 400 million downloads and demonstrated that not even the world's most powerful companies can keep people from a better, safer, and faster Web experience. You all, the grass roots and the heart of the Firefox movement, have helped hundreds of millions of people find that better, safer, and faster Web.

Thank you for building this movement. Thank you for helping Firefox to deliver on the great promises of the Web. On behalf of the hundreds of millions of Firefox users, thank you for all that you have done in just three short years.

Digg it!

Although I have recently been too busy to be her very often, I'm still excited that Firefox reached 400 million downloads! Why isn't there a big party like 250, where even the heading of the page is replaced? (I remember that...) Sheesh. Firefox is getting downloaded so often people are caring less and less about how many downloads it gets.

CONGATULATIONS

Being on-line since the initial Netscape days I must say that FireFox is the best multi platform alternative browser.  Since about 90% of my internet connections take place either at cyber sites or customer´s offices; I have found the Portable Alternative offered by PortableApps.com  (John T. Haller)  a very clean alternative tu using other's software.

To our friends that denigrate of this or that piece of software, I feel that it should not be an issue... Every piece of software is very good for somebodies and a piece of rubbish for others.

Proof positive that the best marketing is an amazing product! It's the single most useful tool on my computer.

I love 'em Plugins: NoScript, Adblock Plus and stuff.

I wish I would've earned 2 cents per download. Or even 100. ;)

Congratulations, all!  In the past 3 years, Firefox has continued to prove the naysayers wrong as it's continued to grow.

Looking forward to the 500M celebration!

I'm incredibly proud to be working side by side with everyone here at Spread Firefox to get the word out about Firefox. This is an amazing achievement that every single one of you deserves credit for - and it's a worldwide movement. Congratulations everyone!

And just to preempt the "a download is not a user" comments, yes, you are right, a download is not a user and we've never claimed it was.

Today we have about 120 million users, so a little more than 1 out of 4 of those downloads turns into a regular Firefox user. In just three years, Spread Firefox has helped drive 400 million people to getfirefox.com and after downloading, installing, and trying out the browser, about 120 million of them are regular Firefox users.

This is amazing, and better than anyone else in the industry that I know of. You've helped Firefox achieve about 20% of the global internet market and as high as 50% in some countries. You all rock!!

Firefox has done so much to spread the use of web standards making the lives of many webmasters that much easier and it has become a real cross platform browser, allowing us to use other operating systems and have the same web experience. But mostly it's a great browser that we get for free. So each of us here at SpreadFirefox doing our little bit to help spread Firefox is the least we can do.

Great milestone, congrats to everyone!

I think Firefox really showed internet browsers the right "way" but the only thing that bothers me is the 100+ mb of ram it kind of sucks out of my system. But it's worth it overall over the porta potty Internet Explorer or gay Safari etc.
