Points! is there any point in them?

What is the point of the point system? I mean you don't win any thing, you don't have to get them to continue being a member, so is there any point to them?

I'm doing a bit of research on this and want to know what you think.

So here's the question again.

Is there any point in collecting points?

I enjoy the points system.

I remember getting my first 2 points nearly two and a half years ago.
It wasn’t too long after I started using Firefox that I joined SFx and learned about the affiliates point system. I do distinctly remember having 0 points and the great feeling after that of starting to accumulate points through my new web site alone.

I started with a few small and simple Get Firefox buttons and then I started to plaster them all over my web site. I figured that the more often that people see one of the Firefox promos then the greater the chances are that I’ll get more points, it’s common sense, I know.
I didn’t fully take into account what exactly the points purpose was, I just knew that I wanted a lot of them. Even when I converted friends and family to Firefox I used my affiliate URL so that I would get points. I stopped doing that a long time ago because the points eventually rolled in on their own and I decided that it was just important that people downloaded Firefox.

To make a long story longer, I’ve enjoyed watching my points climb and I get a good feeling every time that I hit a new points milestone such as the 1,000 mark, 5,000, 10,000 and so on. Points are also a good way to measure how effective the Firefox promos on my site are. The points system can be a friendly competition between two friends whereas one has way more points than the other, he’s higher up on the Top 250 than the other, and he likes to rub it in his friends face. But then one day that friend smokes past you/me and is now unreachable on the Top 250. Thanks Otto!.
Sorry, it’s a personal wound that still hasn’t healed. :)

To wrap this up, and most of all, points are allowing me to see how many people are potentially installing Firefox due to a Firefox promo on my web site and that makes me feel good knowing that little ad that I put there has just changed somebody’s computing life forever.

Get the point? :)

This and That

You're very welcome Ken. Yeah we used to hang around about the same level in the top 250. But then I switched one of my buttons on a very popular page and left you behind. It went so fast I completely forgot to brag when I got 25,000 points. But I can make up for that now ;-)

Anyway seriously, the most important aspect of the points is to see if your strategies at promoting Firefox are working. When I changed that button into a textual button and saw the effect on my points I knew the change was good.

Secondly it just gives me some pleasure to think that several thousand people are now using Firefox because of something I did.
