Let's give the Fox a name

Posted by RainCT on Thu, 06/21/2007 - 19:21Community Marketing Projects

Hi,

There's a bug in Bugzilla about Firefox's mascot (the Fox) not having a name, here: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=250592 .

In an effort to solve this, I'm working on a website that will allow users to submit name proposals, vote for existing ones and comment about them.

Currently I've the design mostly done and I'm going to start working on the programming, (OpenID will be used to login).

Well, what do you guys here at SpreadFirefox think about this? Since I'll need your collaboration for this to be successful... :)

I ran the word FIRE through http://www.babelfish.altavista.org using English to Dutch and got the word BRAND so we name him BRAND Torvalds and give Linus a second son TUX being the first.

I broke my arm and couldn't get the site ready, so since I don't think I'll have time to finish it soon I've decided to release what I've done (licensed under the GPLv3+, plus exception to avoid promotion of closed source products with it ;)) so that somebody else here may continue it.

Download Source

If someone finishes it I might host it, feel free to contact me (email in the README file).

(Note: I want to thank Ebukadneza, from the German Firefox community, for his interest and support.)

I know that page, I even had a printed version of it on my cupboard's door, but I've never really thought of it as the animal. And beside, I believe that the mascot and the program should have a different name; as someone said, for example, Linux's penguin is not called Linux, but Tux. This way it's easier to differentiate if you are calling of the system (in this case program) and the mascot.

But anyway, I don't think the most important on the development of this site (that, by the way, is going slow because I broke an arm and can't currently work on it; don't think I forgot it) is to actually chose a name for the Fox, which is a bit more difficult, but of the marketing value this can have.

I've seen announcing this that there's quite enthusiasm on this. Now imagine when the site is up-and-running; I think having people asking everybody to vote for their idea can be a great way to let even more people know about Firefox.

I made a Random Name Generator to create 1000 random names.
The names are made of SOME of the letters in the abc (letters that won't fit a name for a fox such as J, H, W and Q are not included. F, X, L, M and Z are more common than other letters.)
The length is from 2 to 12 letters. All names are pronounceable.
Remember - Those name are made by a computer and not a person, so some of the names might have meaning ( I've seen Beam, Sea and Peas under my list. Real names like Barny also appeared. ) and it should be ignored.

Note: The list is order alphabetically. Some names were generated twice or more.

The List

I might make a PHP version of the generator. :)

Usually when people abbreviate "Mozilla" they will use the "Moz" part, such as "Mozdev" for "Mozilla Developers". Maybe put L on as half-priority?

I said that all of them are more common than the rest of the letters, but I didn't say that they all have the same rarity... ;)

Submitted by 3518742690 on Thu, 07/19/2007 - 03:05.

It would be a good idea to make separate rarity ratings for all the letters.

For example: set J, H, Q, and W to 0 because they never show up, A, E, I, O, U to 1024 each, because they are vowels (Max value is 2048, BTW) And F, X, L, M, Z can have ratings of 1250 and higher.

A, E, I, O, U, Y, EE, EA, OU - Vowels, listed in a another array of letters (Yes, Y isn't really a vowel)
F, Z, M - Rarity 3
L, X - Rarity 2
Rest of the letters - Rarity 1
J, H, Q and W - Rarity 0

I hope that explains it. :)

...of absolute ratings, rather than comparitive ones.

I like Foxie. How about Mozy Fox(y), or Mozly Fox...? or.... maybe Mozly?

I like FOXIE. When I manually create a restore point on my pc before I install the dreaded monthly patches, I usually call it "Foxy Foxie Best Config".
