Playing with Masks

A few weeks ago, I got an itch. It was the sort of itch that I hadn't had in a very long time. You see, many moons ago I was a bit technical. These days I'm more of a pointy-haired kinda guy over here at Mozilla.

Thanks to the tremendous support of many folks, over the last few weekends and several late nights, I've hacked together my first Firefox add-on.

I call it "Personas for Firefox" and it adds a feature that allows you to instantly put on a new mask or "persona" to personalize your Firefox.

It's still very early in its design and development, but ready for wider testing and feedback.

Please do check it out and let me know what you think. You can find it here:

Special thanks to beltzner, myk, mconnor, gavin, ss, ian hayward, mfinkle, and brendan for their advice and for answering my seemingly random technical questions. And especially to asa, jslater, rolo, graphicsguru, pkim and sean for whipping up the first round of themes that can be applied.

And, of course, Mozilla Japan for the awesome design work on Foxkeh that inspired this whole idea.

PS: if you're at all artistic, please do consider creating your own Persona and submitting it to the list. They are really easy to make!

See everyone? If the honcho can do it, it just shows anyone can ;)

it ends with XPI and my computer doesn't recognize that. Can someone help?

Open your Firefox add-ons manager and drag the .XPI file onto the add-ons manager from your desktop.
Post back if that doesn't work.

I also have added this add-on to my list of reviews. I included 1 picture from the Mozilla Link review and mentioned their review as well.

You can find it here, please forward (both) review(s) to as many people that you know would like an add-on like this!

Thank you

As I mentioned in the Personas' forum this extension provides even greater customization capabilities to Firefox and most importantly, since personas are so easy to create we can expect lots of people jumping in and hopefully companies as well.

I've written a short review of this release at Mozilla Links.

Thanks Chris and all the crew.

I will test it an if its stable write a review about it on my blog (which is all about and only about writing Firefox add-on reviews)

This is very cool.

I recommend that others try it and I assure you that it is completely functional and safe.

I tested it in a clean profile and one with 35 extensions and there were/are no conflicts.

I like them all but my favorite is the Firefox Logo persona. Awesome job on the flicks logo Jamey.

Were is your's Ken of spreadfirefox?

btw companies should be in on this so to add to entertainment (films, music, etc), and advertiments.

Also cool would be masks that are based on your "my-space" background.

Love this extention and I wil review it next week (if not this week).
