New Mozilla Blog
Mozilla's marketing team is getting close to launching a blog intended to serve as the official, central Mozilla blog with both original and cross-posted entries from the Mozilla blogosphere. To date, we’ve not had a central venue, rather disparate sources (press releases, community blogs, Mozillazine, etc.) for users, journalists and other interested folks to hear our stance and take on news and happenings. We will also maintain a blogroll that links to Mozilla community blogs. The Mozilla blog is also intended to build a stronger Mozilla brand association or umbrella to individual blogger personalities.
We are still working on a name for the blog. Please let me know if you have any suggestions. We'll launch by the end of May, if not sooner.
Audience:
We expect the audience for this blog to include both our core set of technically advanced users, members of our extended open source community, new users who are less technically savvy, journalists and bloggers. We’d like to optimize the design for new users and use this platform to provide another perspective on who Mozilla is and what we represent.
Suggested Content:
Once up and running a Mozilla team (cbeard, pkim, mary, melissa, asa, and others) will publish posts of interest to end users of our products, as well as cross-post relevant blog posts from members of our community.
Content will include:
- Mozilla News:
- Mozilla and Firefox data and statistics
- Commentary on Mozilla announcements
- Official statements on issues
- Introduction of new add-ons, companions, etc.
- Product and security update announcements
- Speaking placements and other event involvement
- Helpful tips and tricks for users
- Relevant Mozilla community blog postings, including MDC, Brendan’s musings on the Open Web, etc.
- Commentary on major news articles, reports or relevant happenings on the Web
- Voices: The Mozilla blog needs to be authentic, yet humorous - we shouldn’t take ourselves too seriously nor be too watered down. We envision different individuals creating original content for the blog and anticipate a variety of personalities that shine through. However, the Mozilla blog does have the responsibility to our end users and community to address and tackle serious matters, such as security and privacy, as they arise and should temper its voice in accordance with the subject matter and especially in official statements. Ultimately, the blog needs to support the communication of both the Mozilla and Firefox brand story in ways that align with our orientation as an open source project and public benefit organization.
- Submission suggestions: The Mozilla blog should be open to editorial suggestions by community members via an alias. However, the blog team will ultimately make the judgment call on content.
- Bylines: We’ll assign specific authors to posts to distinguish commentary or in some cases, attribute posts to "Mozilla" in order to delineate official statements.
