New Mozilla Blog

Posted by mary on Tue, 05/08/2007 - 18:46Communications

Mozilla's marketing team is getting close to launching a blog intended to serve as the official, central Mozilla blog with both original and cross-posted entries from the Mozilla blogosphere. To date, we’ve not had a central venue, rather disparate sources (press releases, community blogs, Mozillazine, etc.) for users, journalists and other interested folks to hear our stance and take on news and happenings. We will also maintain a blogroll that links to Mozilla community blogs. The Mozilla blog is also intended to build a stronger Mozilla brand association or umbrella to individual blogger personalities.

We are still working on a name for the blog.  Please let me know if you have any suggestions.  We'll launch by the end of May, if not sooner.

Audience:

We expect the audience for this blog to include both our core set of technically advanced users, members of our extended open source community, new users who are less technically savvy, journalists and bloggers. We’d like to optimize the design for new users and use this platform to provide another perspective on who Mozilla is and what we represent.

Suggested Content:

Once up and running a Mozilla team (cbeard, pkim, mary, melissa, asa, and others) will publish posts of interest to end users of our products, as well as cross-post relevant blog posts from members of our community.

Content will include:

  • Mozilla News:
    • Mozilla and Firefox data and statistics
    • Commentary on Mozilla announcements
    • Official statements on issues
    • Introduction of new add-ons, companions, etc.
    • Product and security update announcements
    • Speaking placements and other event involvement
  • Helpful tips and tricks for users
  • Relevant Mozilla community blog postings, including MDC, Brendan’s musings on the Open Web, etc.
  • Commentary on major news articles, reports or relevant happenings on the Web
Criteria/Guidelines for Content:

  • Voices:  The Mozilla blog needs to be authentic, yet humorous - we shouldn’t take ourselves too seriously nor be too watered down.  We envision different individuals creating original content for the blog and anticipate a variety of personalities that shine through. However, the Mozilla blog does have the responsibility to our end users and community to address and tackle serious matters, such as security and privacy, as they arise and should temper its voice in accordance with the subject matter and especially in official statements. Ultimately, the blog needs to support the communication of both the Mozilla and Firefox brand story in ways that align with our orientation as an open source project and public benefit organization.
  • Submission suggestions:  The Mozilla blog should be open to editorial suggestions by community members via an alias.  However, the blog team will ultimately make the judgment call on content.
  • Bylines: We’ll assign specific authors to posts to distinguish commentary or in some cases, attribute posts to "Mozilla" in order to delineate official statements.
  • Potential Tags:*
    • Around the Web
(commentary on happenings, trends and news)
    • Mozilla News
    • Tips & Tricks
    • Mozilla Community

*These will evolve as needed

It looks great.
Will comments be turned on?
And it's nice to see you and Rhian again (in the pic).

I'd suggest at least having a little notification list option for folks wishing to be informed when the site launches. I assume you'll mention here, but forgive me as I don't track closely. Still, others may not visit here at all but would probably love this information.

I second the vote for blog.mozilla.com.

Drop me your email if you're interested in knowing as soon as it goes live :)  In order to keep it simple, it looks like we're going to go with "Mozilla Blog" at blog.mozilla.com for now.  Thanks for all the ideas!

This is a great initiative. I just saw when I blogged about the new eBay add-on I got over 120 hits/day. So add-ons are important and people are looking/search in blogs for information.

I would for sure follow this blog, and hope that its 'blogroll' includes a reference list of knowledge based sites (of which some could be projects derived from SFX).

Names ;o) well time to start a competition right? Winner get a T-shirt ;o)

Anyway I will start kicking of the list here:

  • MoCo-chino
  • MoCoZino
  • Blogzilla (well that was expected)
  • Zilla-Villa (You see we need rhyming ;o)

Well after blogs --> tumblelogs and the cool features of stumble upon can we not start a new kind of blog: haplogging? As from hap: (3) to happen: as it so hap.

  • MoCo Haplog
  • MozHap (!)
  • etc..

Anyway you get the drift: once again SFX-ers unite and brainstorm!

Blogzilla is already taken. (It's dead now though.)

Mozilla Blog perhaps? Really witty, don't you think?

MozBlog is my other suggestion. I guess you will have thought of these already though.

keep it simple imo, there are loads of great funky named blogs for Mozilla from the community already so in line with the goals of making a central location why not use what we already have?

use http://blog.mozilla.com and make the current list on this site the blogroll then make this domain a proper blog.

you could still give it a funky title like MozBlog :)
