Is your mom using firefox?

How do you reach all the people that thoughtless click on the IE icon to reach the internet and who would be scared to install something new on their computers.

Like my mom.  She is still not sure how to order prints from shutterfly.com.  She has been clicking IE only because it came with the computer.

I'm just curious- is your mom using firefox?  If she's not, what would it take to get her to switch?

Thanks!

MJ

I tried to get my parents to use firefox but they were scared of the icon. They were so used to the blue e that anything else loooked like a virus or something. So I just changed the firefox icon into an IE icon and they've been comlimenting the new IE ever since.

all's well that ends well

My mum was using IE on her own computer for a long time. I always told her how much better Firefox is and I installed it together with a few extensions that make using Firefox more comfortable for her. Now she's using Firefox.
I did the same with my younger brother who really loved IE. :-)

Well my mum barley ever goes on the computer and she only ever checks her email, so what would it take to get her to use Firefox? Well a computer she could actually use (she is not very good with them), an understanding of what a web browser is, to understand that nearly 90 od percent of the net is crawling with viruses and worms and spoof sites, oh, and the actual want to use the internet more than once every three months or so.

My mum started using Mozilla Firefox when I switched from IE to Mozilla Firefox in 2005. I just installed It on our computer, told her the benefits of using It and she did use It.

At my school, the situation is different.  The state government's department of education has a deal with MS so we can't use Mozilla Firefox, we have to use IE. We can't use OpenOffice.org, we have to use MS office. We can't use Nvu, we have to use frontpage.

 In long...

My mother never used a computer beyond solitaire so when she got the Internet for the first time for herself, I got the privilege to setup her system.

First thing I did was install Avast, Firefox and Thunderbird and show her how to use them. My system was simple enough...

  1. Put shortcut to Internet Connection on desktop named "Connect to Internet"
  2. Rename Firefox to "Internet"
  3. Rename Thunderbird to "E-mail"
  4. Remove Internet Explorer from Desktop

I recently got my mom to switch, because as Yahoo has upgraded their email system, her ie was unable to load it properly and instead gave her a simpler version with most of the functions inactive, including the address book, which she uses all the time. I told her to try Firefox, she did, it worked, and she hasn't looked back. My dad is a different story...

We have 3 computers with internet access on the house (another 1 isn't connected to the WLAN yet and 2 are inactive).
On my computer I installed Firefox (On Windows, Linux and all my Virtual machines!) and removed IE (Yet kept the rendering engine, in case some programs use it to render basic HTML) and all the shortcuts to it.
On the other computer which my sisters and parents use I installed Firefox but kept IE with blocked ActiveX. I don't allow my sisters and my parents open IE on that computer unless the site can't be viewed right (Actually viewed right in Firefox, but should be viewed wrong like in IE) in Firefox and there is no replacement for it. (Bank accounts and such)
My mom uses IE only in her laptop from work (she uses it only to visit her work's website) because she isn't allowed to install anything on that laptop.

As far as I'm aware, there are a couple of non direct browser usage for IE on Windows:

1. viewing and rendering HTML help files (with a .chm extension).

2. The Web Browser ActiveX control in VB/VBA, and thus all apps that use it.

There may be more; if its possible to use FF for either of these without breaking existing apps then I'd like to know.

There's IEPatcher that replaces the IE ActvieX with the Mozilla ActiveX and also alternative CHM viewers with the gecko engine.

I don't allow EVERY PERSON to use another Internet Browser. THEY MUST USE FIREFOX.

However, I use also Opera, Safari, Internet Explorer, etc

for web design, to view the result in all IBrowsers.

The web accesibility is important for a good web site.

My mother is thinking about it, my father only installs things he needs, and my brother has it installed, but uses a browser at random.

I did convert some people from my class.

I just tell everyone the facts about it, I switch people at school and my whole family is using it,

Some stubborn bastards just talk shit when you say about it, like I haven't heard of firefox and my computer comes with ie,

"Yes but, blah blah" If we could just get the message accross and they understood I don't see how people CAN'T use it!

Me, my two brothers, my sister, and my mom uses Firefox but dad still doesn't.  But what Caleb_H said is a great idea but you also have to change the icon to the Internet Explorer icon.

Another measure you can take is setting the IE proxy settings to something fake like 127.0.0.1 so IE can not connect to anything. (Perhaps add an exception for the windows update site)

Deleting the IE logo is always good, I don't really like changing the Firefox icon... but my dear old aging mother, the last time I checked, still uses Netscape 7.2. I will probably have to sneak in SeaMonkey 1.1 eventually  throwing the Netscape logo on it. She reeeeeally doesn't like change.

All of my family is using firefox except for my sister on her laptop (uses ie7 because her college requires it.)

 It was actually quite simple.

1. Download ie7 and wait for a day or so while they get fed up with the gui.

2. Delete the icon for ie on their desktop.

3. Create a new shortcut for firefox, change the ff icon to the ie icon, then change the icon's name to "Internet Explorer."

4. Disable tabbed browsing in the options menu (my mom doesn't understand tabs, sigh.)

5. Make sure the homepage is the same, install fasterfox and tada they can't open ie and they are happy with ff (faster load times etc.)

Well, I really do think my mom would like Firefox, but my dad seems to... not like it at all. He calls almost everything that doesn't come already installed on your computer "junk"... I've tried to tell him about how great Firefox is but he won't hear of it, because he "doesn't need" Firefox. And, since my dad uses my mom's computer a lot (he uses both of "my mom's computers" a lot), until she gets a really-truly-her-very-own-dad-doesn't-use-it computer, she probably won't have Firefox... and I secretly hope that my dad gets bombarded by popups and becomes fed up with IE... :P

He doesn't need Firefox. He needs something other than IE, and Firefox just seems like the best alternative at the time.

When my mom got her new PC, I installed it for her before she used it, and she's not regretted it, at all. And damned straight, too. XD

It was pretty simple really.  My parents are not very techie.  They needed help with their computer. Talking things over with my father I mentioned I don't use IE.  He was curious, so I told him about it.  Then he asked me  to install Firefox.  I would never force something on somebody.  I switched my father-in-law the same way.  That is another story.

Same situation where he needed help with his computer.  I just mentioned I don't use IE for various reasons.  Then he asked me  to install Firefox. Sounding similar?  Well, there was one major difference.  My father-in-law messes with things he shouldn't (cause he doesn't have a clue as to what he is doing).  He kept losing his bookmarks! (Note- I have never "lost my bookmarks)  This was somewhat problematic since he lives 2,000 miles away.  More than once I told him he should just use IE.  He refused! He hasn't lost his bookmarks in a long time and he still uses Firefox to this day.

She uses the AOL browser, because she very rarely browses the internet. She just goes on very occasionally if she needs something. 99% of the time she just plays Solitaire.I've told her about Firefox, but she has little interest, so doesnt need to switch over.

If ya wanna get your mother to switch, get her intetested in the web first.
