Feature requests for spreadfirefox.com

Posted by Johnny K on Wed, 01/17/2007 - 21:24SFX.com-related Forum

The webmasters of spreadfirefox.com are currently working on adding features to the site and expect the new features to be available in March. [1]

I was wondering if anyone has any features that they would like to request. Keep in mind, I am not affiliated with the webmasters. Don't expect all of your ideas to be used, and don't be surprised if none of them are used. It's entirely up to them. I just thought you could use this as an opportunity to let the team know what you would like to see.

I'd like a feed for each member, containing their SFx id and the number of points that person got, in order to be able to integrate your own point count into your own website.

Sometimes when a person submits a blog or forum topic about Firefox related news, they include a link to digg the story. I think it would be nice if spreadfirefox.com made this process easier.

Maybe just a little section under the text editor that allows the member to fill in a URL, title, and description that would be POSTed to http://www.digg.com/submit.php (or whatever their submit page is). The link the digg story could then be easily added to the person's post.

I don't know if it's actually possible to POST to digg from another website. If not, they it would just be nice to somehow make the whole process of submitting a digg story about the topic easier.

I was thinking it could look something like this:
http://mejiascrib.com/wordpress/

Notice how most (starting with the third from the top) of his posts also have a link that says "digg story". I'd love SFX forum threads / blogs could have the same thing. It would help us spread Firefox news more easily.

The Spreadfirefox FAQ could use a major redo.

Many things are outdated, links are wrong (e.g. links to the store), it is much too long and not well structured.

Commenting on the FAQ itself is not possible, although it asks for comments explicitly (last lines).

Remember when SFX was looking for sponsorship for the "Flicks on TV" project? Soon after the announcement (within a few days I think), all 72 sponsor spots were filled.

I think one of the reasons the spots were filled so quickly was because people were excited to be credited for their support. I know that it was one of the main reasons I decided to help out.

I think that members should always receive credit for helping to spread Firefox. After each project is completed, maybe you could just put up a list of the SFX members who helped out. It seems unimportant, but I think it would get people a lot more excited about helping out.

This idea is kind of similar to my "Difficulty Level" indicator idea. This idea isn't necessarily meant to replace that idea. Maybe you could use both together, if you decide to use them at all.

Anyway, I think that each project should allow for at least two levels of involvement. Along with each project description you could describe the different ways in which people can participate. Even if it's just a simple project, you could give members the option of simply donating money to the group working on the project as an alternative to actually participating (hence at least two levels of involvement).

I'll use the "Faith Browser" project as an example. I don't know how Faith Browser came to be, but just pretend it was a project open to all SFX members. The project description could look something like this this:

Faith Browser

Objective: Create a theme and extension that would allow users to make Firefox a reflection of their values and faith.

Participate:
  • Very Involved: Develop the extension and theme to be used with Faith Browser
  • Involved: Translate the Bible quotes used in Faith Browser
  • Easy: Tell others about Faith Browser
  • Very Easy: Donate money to the Faith Browser team

We have thought about these things also, and you will see what w came up with ;o)

As far as when a project is running: I think you will be a great coordinator and cannot see which other cool projects you come up with (Do not forget your running projects ;o)

Ian was saying he was looking for ideas related to creating "an easy way for people to have different levels of active involvement spreading Firefox". Here's my idea.

I would like to see each project description have a "Difficulty Level" indicator. It could just be a little line or image below the title of the project that would say something like "Easy" or "Very Involved". I think it would help people easily filter out projects that are too involved for their liking.

Maybe you could even use some SQL to let the user sort our certain projects according to difficulty level.

In addition to the current point system, or in place of it, would it be possible to have a point system that counts how many referrals lead to actual Firefox downloads?

Point 3 is handy, surely if you want to do a project, know who is online and know what the primary projects skills are of that person...

We are listening (as ever) and paying attention dudes :) So bring on the suggestions and ideas!

We can't promise anything in advance as we have our work cut out rolling out new changes built on Drupal 5 but lets see shall we?

Btw - the theme of the new features are action orientated, think... community empowered Projects, Groups and an easy way for people to have different levels of active involvement spreading Firefox.

I would like to the current market share of Firefox highlighted somewhere on the site, possibly near the download counter.

for Spread Firefox, but it's rarely used.
Perhaps now that members know about it,
it can come back to life.

You need ChatZilla to participate.

Can we set this up as a side project. It would be nice to get more project driven, and post conclusions of lengthy discussions to projects.
