SFx, Introduce Yourself

Posted by ken on Fri, 12/29/2006 - 20:20SFX.com-related Forum

Spread Firefox (and Mozilla in general) is all about community. We have more than 195,000 registered members here with more joining every day. With that being said, I thought that it would be a good idea to have us introduce ourselves.

It’s a good way to bring us all a little closer and perhaps gain some new friends. After all, we all have a common goal and I think that it’s nice to know who you are working with.

Whether you are new to Spread Firefox or a veteran, just simply introduce yourself and add any information that you wish, such as your location, occupation etc.

I'm John, a jack of all trades and master of many of them. My day job is SQL Server/MySQL DBA, VB/VBA programmer, web developer, server admin working in London, UK.  The systems I look after are primarily Windows based, but I'm looking to move towards technologies that are open source, minimising the lock in on proprietary technologies (not just MS lock in).  I've got a BSc (Hons) in Information Systems, MCSE in Windows 2003 and MCDBA in SQL Server 2000.

Outside of work when time permits I develop and support an Access addin called MDB Doc (  http://www.jrbarnett.freeserve.co.uk/mdbdoc.htm ) for documenting an Access database out to an HTML file on disk, which i wrote basically because I was fed up with the built in documenter - it gave too much information for the output I wanted, and outputted the data in the Access snapshot format, which is proprietary - the viewer is included with MS Office or downloadable from the MS website, but they are the only ways of viewing the output files from the native documenter.

Viewing the MDB Doc output files with the latest Firefox is part of my test routine for the software.  Since my first post ( ?q=node/view/28551 ) I've switched browser and am in the process of moving many other apps across to open source equivalents at home and work where feasible.

I came to spreadfirefox quite by accident having a look through the default links in the browser installation, liked what I saw and joined.   Its a change from SQL and VBA development...

I am a 17 year old girl from Germany (I live in Freiburg which is a city in the south). I like reading, listening to music and of course everything that has to do with the internet (reading and writing in communities, chatting, creating websites,...). I am also interested in computer science which is my favourite subject at school.

I am using Firefox since a few years now and I like it very much and because of that I am here.

Hello,

I'm a web-developer and i was interested in your site because it has page-freeze transition.  I'm developing now the site and I can't understand on how to implement page-freeze transition in Firefox.

Internet Explorer has meta filters: HTTP-EQUIV="Page-Enter" CONTENT="Alpha(Opacity=100)" and HTTP-EQUIV="Page-Exit" CONTENT="Alpha(Opacity=100)"; and that works fine but not in Firefox. I want  to support Firefox an I request you to describe how it works in www.spreadfirefox.com (if it is not top secret :) ).

  Best regards.

Sometimes older people need some more time to do something. Somewhat late, but hopefully not yet too late I would like to tell you something about me.

I am working with Firefox since about two years. Well, Firefox is nothing only for young computer freaks. Also people like me use it daily and enjoy it. So now what are older people? Recently I was asked in a chatroom, how old I am. I answered "I'm looking like 75, I'm 55 and I feel like 35".

I live in a small town northwest of Hamburg/Germany. No sow knows Uetersen (17.000 inhabitants). I'm not married and have no children. Therefore there is so much time for the internet. And I live in a group house and that with my age ...

Professionally I am independent and selfemployed, spending my time with technical writing, technical illustrations, pictures and graphics. If you find a "Guidance to bend paper clips from flower wire", it may be written by me. In the last months I work intensively with google sketchup, a 3D drawing program. look for it.

Because I'm interested in good graphics, I often look within Firefox and on the websites of Ken and Graphicsguru. On this way a happy hello to them.

If someone is interested in photos about me, he she it may have a look at flickr. There I documented my life back down to my grandparents.

Thats all for today about me. Keep merrily and faithfully to Firefox.

I'm fairly new to the Spread Firefox community, and I'm very glad I became a member. It goes without saying that I love Firefox!

I'm still at school (in my last year). When I leave I hope to get a job in the construction industry. I always wanted to be a carpenter, but I'm having problems finding an apprenticeship. I may be enrolling on a plumbing course though, soon.

My main interests include : DIY, camping, snooker/pool, computing (BitTorrent, XHTML, CSS), cycling, playing the guitar and bass guitar.

Not much to say other than that!

Coming from a MS Certified IT platform, i'm always obliged to pump IE first at work... although as a designer (and Facebook.com addict), I use FF regularly as my browser of choice.  I can't always promote FF the way I like..  but do tell my clients to check out my portfolio on my website... it's subtle... but i'm slowly gaining a following.  It's not much.. but it's something.

Our blog is a journal on our son's homeschooling, a topic very important to us but definitely nothing revolutionary or significantly technical. But anyway, yesterday I downloaded the IE Tab Add-On into my Firefox and saw our blog rendered in IE for the very first time. I was horrified how UGLY it looked! :o

That got me pasting a Firefox button on our blog posthaste. I hope everyone who reads our blog decides to switch soon. Firefox, the better to see you with. ;)

It's time to rebuild connections, community of the World Wide Web really. Let me know, if anyone can tell me the relationship between Netscape and Firefox? Both are my favorite in its times, cause now Firefox domination come true day after day.

Submitted by ottodv on Sun, 02/11/2007 - 01:43.

Firefox came out of the ashes of Netscape, here is the oversimplefied short version:

When AOL took over Netscape the source code was put into a new and separate entity, now known to us as Mozilla. They cleaned up the code and made it open source, one of the applications to use that code is Firefox.

Netscape and Firefox still share the same rendering engine, Gecko.

I joined SpreadFirefox around the Firefox Preview days; SpreadFirefox was, I believe, relatively new then.  Firefox is a superior browser and probably always will outdo the competition as long as the community thrives.

I have been using and promoting Firefox since way back in the early ".o" days on my website and by word of mouth. I was also aware of this site, but only yesterday when I decided to change the buttons from blue to orange did I realize how extensive and dedicated this group is.

My site has Firefox buttons throughout it, plus a section or two with my experiences using it in a Firefox section. I recently added a button to my blog. I have also had great success with Thunderbird and now use it for all my email off a usb thumbdrive.

I am not the youngest person in the group having recently retired, but I am an internet addict and always use Firefox to feed the addiction. Located in Nova Scotia, Canada, many of my friends use Firefox and I converted most of them.

Hello from the UK!

After using Mozilla products for years I have only just found this site to promote Firefox.

Great idea, lets all spread the word! The quicker we can get people using a proper browser the better.

Regards,

Jake Lazarus.
