Provide discounts for Firefox users

I love JorDak's idea of giving Firefox users a discount at his store. It got me thinking...

Would spreadfirefox.com be able to work with a popular online store (cafepress.com, bustedtees.com, something like that) to do something similar? SFX members could raise some money, say $500. We could ask the company to sell their merchandise at 10% off for Firefox users until the money they lose due to the sale reaches $400. $400 of what we raised would go towards repaing that amount. The other $100 would be theirs to keep, just to get them more interested. Of course, we could choose to raise more or less than $500.

A few weeks ago, SFX members eagerly and quickly put up $720, so I don't think raising money would be a problem. The only hard part would be getting an online store to work with us, but I'm sure it's possible.

This is a good idea..But it is not so easy to do ...How will you finance discounts ?Or what will you offer to the shops ?

We really don't need to offer them anything. If a store were to provide discounts for Firefox users, people would probably talk about the store on digg, slashdot, etc.

Well, here's a draft of a letter which I hope can be sent out to an online store. It's very drafty, I would need to fix it up. Any comments would be welcome and appreciated.

I could send it out myself, but I think it would look a lot better if either a SFX administrator or someone from Mozilla would send it out.

My name is Johnny K. I am an active member of spreadfirefox.com, a website dedicated to promoting and increasing awareness of the Mozilla Firefox web browser.

In order to further promote Firefox, we have decided to offer a deal to your company from which your company, your customers, and Firefox will all benefit. I have not proposed this idea to any other company and will not unless you do not accept. By offering a discount to Firefox users, your company will receive massive media attention. To my knowledge, no large company has ever done anything similar. By being the first company to offer a discount to Firefox users, even a small discount such as 5%, you can expect to receive massive attention from the media (especially the online community). Popular websites such as slashdot.org and digg.com will certainly make reference to this story. In addition, it can be expected that your company will be a topic of discussion at spreadfirefox.com, a community consisting of more than 190,000 registered members. A good number of these members also have their own websites and blogs dedicated to discussing Firefox news.

Determining the browser of a customer is a very simple process requiring only javascript or a server-side scripting language (http://drupal.org/node/65903 - browser detection using PHP).

If you are interested, please contact [contact info].

Remember, you are the only company that we are currently proposing this to. Take advantage of this opportunity to gain huge publicity at a low cost.

But you might want to make the Firefox thing more subtle. Remember, you're risking blacklist as well as rejection. The Web is small.

And remember to remind them that they have as long as they need (3 months or something) to decide.

What do you mean by blacklist?

I'm gonna try writing a letter to an online store. I'll submit it to an admin before I send it. Wish me luck.

I'm not sure its necessary to offer these stores money. Here's why:

I'm sure you receive coupons in the mail or in newspapers offering a percentage discount in several retailers. Realize that these stores have actually paid money to get these discounts in your possession. Stores do not lose money on coupons, because they tend to get more customers who spend more money as a result.

Instead of offering cash to these stores, we should actually be offering free advertising, which is basically what we're doing for firefox anyway.

I agree, we as a community will quite naturally provide some free advertisement to any company who makes a good offer for Fx users. We would blog about it and tell our friends.

Let's do it. I'm sure we can find an online store that would be interested. How should we do this? Should I ask an admin to contact an online store?

You don't really need any official blessing. All you need to do is find stores who are willing to do this by pointing out the advantages for them.

Just go for it! I am thinking about how to get companies involved with Firefox for ages, and this is a cool idea. I always feel so stupid when good ideas come up and it wasn't me (again).

Lets see where it goes...
