crashes and pop ups

About two or three days ago FF started crashing and the "send log" window kept popping up messages and queues for messages saying there was something wrong with my proxy settings and the error logs weren't getting through.  Then when I tried to open the window, I'd get a crash and when FF disappeared there were IE pop ups underneath it.  Seems like some sort of adware has gotten through.  Anyone else having these problems?  Is there a fix?

That might be the Talkback Agent (aka Quality Feedback Agent) which is installed in all Mozilla Software like Firefox, Thunderbird, Seamonkey. It reports crash information to the developers. It's not spyware or adware. See the Firefox FAQ for more information.
The other IE-like window might be the similar MS-Windows software.

Please go the Firefox Support pages for questions like that. Remember that Spreadfirefox is a marketing site.
