Couldn't just take IE anymore...

Posted by MicrosoftSam on Mon, 11/13/2006 - 20:43Your Firefox Switch Stories

I have always been sticking with internet explorer for the last 6 years but when I truly found out about those hidden folders full of tracking files which you can't view with windows explorer I just had to change.

My first impressions of Firefox  are both good and bad, I really like the tabs and bookmarks.

Though here are some bad points, and i guess they exist because of my inexperience so please help me to remove them:

- Firefox doesn't have those nice folders  that IE had for cookies etc, where do i find cookies, typed URls, temporary files,  all the history and all those kinds of files? I've heard that they are in some DAT-files, now that would suck... any program or so to open DAT files with? The point is that it would be nice to have full control and overview over your files.

- How do you make it stop saving what you entered in login fields? and not to ask about saving password/username for sites?

If they aren't text files, then I'm going to have a few words to say to the Firefox corporation...

Try opening with Notepad.

First, let me address your "how do you..." question.  Go to "Tools" and then select "Options".  Go to the "Privacy" tab and uncheck the "Remember what I enter in forms and the search bar". That should clear that issue.

As for the finding of where cookies are stored, there is an extension that I use called View Cookies, which has done a fine job for me.

I hope I've been of at least some help!

I'll try to help you out a bit, and welcome to Firefox, I hope you enjoy it!

For cookies, go to Tools>Options, then under Privacy, click "Show Cookies". That's your cookie manager, where you can delete and do anything with your cookies.

The history, just press Ctrl+H and it'll display all your history, and you're free to organize it how you want, and also to delete certain things.

I'm pretty sure that FF uses some kind of file (probably dat) to store all the info, because I've never been able to find it through Windows Explorer.

And finally, about the login fields, go back to the Options, then under "Security" tab, then there is the "Passwords" section, where you can enable/disable the remembering of passwords, as well as tell it which sites to remember it for, and set a Master Password to use for all remembered passwords.

I really hope that helped you out! and if you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask!
