Firefox 2 Is Taking Off!

For most of October, the vast majority of Firefox users hitting my website were using Firefox 1.5, The percentage using Firefox 2 (betas and RCs) hovered around 3% for the first three weeks. The percentage of IE users with IE7 hovered around 2%.

The IE7 percentages didn't change much when IE7 was released. It climbed from ~2% to ~4%. But Firefox 2 jumped from 3% to 8% the day it was released, and has already climbed to 22% in less than a week!

IE7 will probably take off more next month, when automatic updates start offering it. But it's interesting to see: when Firefox offers a new version, nearly 1/4 of its users have upgraded within a week. When IE offers a new version, everyone wants to wait and see.

(I've got even higher FX2 numbers on the Alternative Browser Alliance, but traffic's so much lower that the stats are very erratic.  On that site, the second-highest percentage of IE7 hits (14%) is actually a week before the release!)

not so significantly.....

The fact:

Many users on WinXP SP2 can receive updates via Automatic Updates, however, there are quite a number who are using unlicensed copies and with the required genuine validation, they will not be able to install IE7 even if they can the installer downloaded.

...that coupled with the fact that the Firefox installer can bypass most administrative settings, would leave a pretty strong message about Firefox.

So you're saying Windows users can't get IE7 if they don't have a licenced Windows CD of Windows -- but the that means  millions of people will be deprived of IE7 -- poor little things!

Ah but they can use Firefox, can't they?, happy they, happy we, happy all !

The fact is, many of the free software by Microsoft now requires genuine advantage validation. Only if you pass the validation, you are allowed to install the software. Hence, users of pirated copies are locked out.

Besides IE7, 2 other software that I did install that requires validation are Windows Defender and Media Player 11.

Well... yeah.. Firefox rocks. We can actually take advantage from this situation to promote Firefox to these people who are locked out from IE7.

...along with a friend, we've made 40 reasons NOT to buy Microsoft products, genuine validation being one.

Here's part of the joke...

Bill Gates and the president of Ford went to another conference in 2007. Bill Gates started, "If Ford had kept up to technology like Microsoft, we'd be driving $15 cars with 4000 mpg, even more efficient than the $25 cars with 1500 mpg that I suggested last time."

The president of Ford replied, "If Ford had 'kept up with technology' and built cars like Microsoft built computers, then...

 1. The car's windows...

... (skip down to reason 37)...

...37. Every new customization by Ford would require genuine validation. Hello?!? It's a CAR, not a computer!...

...(skip down to reason 40)...

...any more than 3000 rpm, and the engine would go up in flames."

"And you say WE'RE technologically retarded!"

We're trying to get to 100 reasons. Can you come up with a few that would simulate a car? e.g. "53. There'd be a new 'VirtuCar' function that would completely screw up the car's engine."

Oh, and BTW, give an explanation about the real computer-related equivalent.

"Software pirates! Install Firefox so you don't have to worry about getting caught!" doesn't sound like the best advertising pitch.  It might be effective with pirates, but it might turn off a lot of mainstream users.
