Well i was thinking, if we could get firefox into schools it could have  somplete knock on effect. If th children liked it, they would download it at home and then there parents would download it. Not to mention the teachers! It would be a big change but i would love it i cant stand internet explorer!

My school uses Firefox, because of my computer science teacher. She hates IE and Outlook.
All shortcuts leading to IE were deleted (of course the pupils ARE ABLE to use IE, but nobody does that because when they don't see the shortcut on the desktop, they don't search it).

Hi,

the Phoenix Fox Project has recently started the Phoenix Fox Schools initiative, I am looking for a small team of people to come and help run this sub project and after seeing these posts I have decided to ask here first. I am after around 4 people who are able to keep an eye on the project and able to post useful information about how Mozilla Firefox can be used in schools. This project is still in need of a logo and a Chief Administrator. No previous knowledge required but it is preferable. Please contact me at phoenix@phoenixfox.info by the end of the month.

Sincerely,

Phoenix, Creator of the Phoenix Fox Project

My high school actually has it. In middle school, they didn't have it, but I managed to download it to my personal file, so I could only get on that computer on that account. But any extensions I downloaded to it were gone every time the computer was logged off. However, in my new school, they actually have sense and have Firefox too. Though I don't usually use it. I have Firefox for my U3 flash drive, so any extensions, themes, or cookies I have aren't deleted when the computer turns off.

Yea I talked to my IT teacher he basically said

1) firefox makes it easier for students to hack and get past school firewalls etc

2) Public schools get in Australia get sponsered by microsoft to use their products and only their products. (e.g. schools get a discount when they buy computers and software from microsoft and in return they insure that only their products get used at school)

3)  i can't remember the other reasons.

Hi,

I was talking to an IT teacher at my school who loves firefox but he told me that it dosent get used in the school very often because it's unfriendly for network administrators, because they can't set the proxy settings over the network. If theres a way to do this I might just be able to get my school onto firefox! Anyone know of ways?

Thanks!

Hi there :)

Our school doesn't use it either:(

However, I know and have tested at home an active directory add on for firefox. It works well. It stores the settings in group policy and you use a script during logon (vbs) to activate it.

I will look out the website when I get home.....

Well see our school has Firefox 1.5, but I want 2.0.  I don't have an admin account but if I just install 2.0 over 1.5 it goes fine, although stupid Fortres blocks Firefox from updating over the net.  I have recently found a small workaround for Fortres but I still have to individually install it on every computer if I wanna be able to use Firefox 2.0, which takes forever considering our school computers are some of the slowest I've seen.

No, there is no plug in to control Firefox from every computer but you could try some remote control software such as AB Tutor, Remote Desktop Connection and a few others but it also depends on the server.  For example is your school running Net ware or Windows server 2000 or 2003. If you can tell me what it is I can help you.

I think I know why schools that do not accept firefox, maybe it is because IE is the easiest medium (for them) to teach internet basics & it is the browser they have expertise on. If Firefox can provide a free teachers manual that provide clear instructions, it can boost knowledge about new firefox users/teachers. Firefox should create a theme well suited to the level (like kiddie designs and bright colors for younger people and so on ...). Firefox should provide a educational version wherein the teacher is in control (some of you may not like this but it might boost popularity in schools)
& major settings are locked/remotely done. Firefox needs to be able to work with programs and hardware that control where the students surf so that it can provide ease in installations. Advertising campaigns to education-related sites can help greatly on promoting firefox (should tell why firefox is the best and why remove the rest). In my opinion, this should help boost campaigns(since schools are foundations of the future, maybe it will become a preference for future generations to use firefox). I hope firefox keeps on growing and beat that IE(WHICH I HATE)! In my opinion only. =D

I doubt my school would let Firefox into the system. I installed it without permission, within 4 days it was banned, even though all the restricted websites were still in place. So even if I go and talk to them I doubt they would allow it to be on the Network. I doubt they'll allow much, my brother who went to the same school was using www.altavista.com they banned it as they 'didn't like the looks of it'... it's a harmless search engine! I just hope they learn their lesson with ie7, I'm hoping it will destroy the network as it has reportedly done with so many other computers.

well, my high school has completely banned firefox.

if you are seen using it, then you immediatly have to shut down the computer, go straight to the principal, with an IT in the room, you have to:

1.) explain how you got it to run

2.) explain how you got it to connect

    3.)why

other than that, they will take away all computer privilages, because it is technically hacking the network.  firefox manages to bypass the filter that our school uses, but they just upgraded and downgraded in a sense. they are now using linux servers and all internet access is routed through there.  they bought software to filter out content, and it alerts someone when the keyword "firefox" is typed.

now firefox should be just fine.  everything is blocked and filtered now.  in order to get past the old filter, you just had to turn off the proxy settings in IE

Submitted by meisinscotland on Thu, 11/09/2006 - 14:47.

We have "JANET" filtering service in our college but since they are sol lenient about flashdrive usage we can all use portable firefox (most of my class does) and we can get past all the blocking without altering IE's proxy settings (which has been locked, sadly)

Firefox should definitely be used in all schools from elementary to grad schools. It is by far the best web browser ever. I do however believe that for a school it should be properly configured by the school's administrator as far as security because obviously somethings will be blocked by firefox.

I used to try and use Portable Firefox in my school, but when it failed to connect, along with Portable Opera, I gathered they must have been using Microsoft Exchange Server, which only performs the connection "Handshake" with IE. Sucks I know.

I'm in College now and luckily the servers there are slightly more decent, and I can use my Portable Firefox whenever. Not only that but it completely gets passed the JANET web filtering service, and I proved it because when I used IETAB to switch, it instantly blocked the site I was on, the unblocked it when I switched back to Firefox mode.

Some of the staff at College actually promote the use of Firefox, and there is a "Get Firefox" button on the Homepage, but to most people who don't know what that is it's just another distraction from the dreaded web page. As per usual the lousy technicians worship MS, and when I was on my work experience I well and truly learned that they could not live without IE. They use all it's features:

IE, Outlook, DCOM, RPC, Active Desktop, Scripting, and more. There's even this stupid advertising bot in the library that take up, wait for it... 40MEG of Memory. Whenever I sit at that workstation it's CTRL+SHIFT+ESC for me, and end task... I cannot stand 40Megs of wasted memory.

You can download Portable Firefox from www.portableapps.com and just try it. If when you launch it there is no web activity after half a minute, I'm afraid your school is on that dreaded MS Exchange server. If not, you hit the jackpot!

Good Luck Firefoxing, and well done in finding a better browser.

I've been studying in Eselx for about 2 years, and one of the great things I'd noticed was the fact that every computer in my school has the firefox installed, and the usage of firefox was something pretty common. But now with firefox 2, there are no longer any valid excuses. This browser is great. In my, not so, humble opinion the usage of Firefox in Portugal is on a great way, i personally enjoy the fact of we could choose between Portuguese from Portugal, and Portuguese with the Brazilian standard. I don't know what, internet explorer will do, but i predict some storming times for the Microsoft company  .

Well, I have created a solution for the problem I told you about in the previous post. I created a page that is called "1776 America" which just has a page claiming to be a 404 Error. When you click on "Report this error", Firefox downloads. Never once on the page does it say "Mozilla", "Firefox", and I even renamed the installer to be FFSetupVersion[insert version here].exe, so no filter is going to stop it. If your school blacklists it, let me know and I'll start an new page, maybe thisone can pretend to be about foxes!

Feel free to use the Trojan Fox to get Firefox on your school's computers. The URL is: www.1776America.googlepages.com

At my school we had that Symantec I-Gear, which didn't so much as block page content that said "Firefox" but would block any .zip or .exe download. If you were to make the download available to even those clients, I would pack it in a 7-zip archive. Because, technicians who generally don't believe in 3rd party software probably won't even have thought to have blocked the .7z extensions (I have read up on I-gear, it requires manual configuration) and so you can download happily.

Maybe the school computers will have archiving software, most of which nowadays has caught onto the growing 7-zip.

Submitted by Callum Fraser on Sun, 10/29/2006 - 21:33.

Rename the file extension to [Name of File].exe.doc, so the content blockers only "see" the .doc part of the extension, and let me tell you now there aren't many content blockers that block MSWord Documents! Then when you get it just take the .doc part of it away and you should, (we hope) be fine.

But all I got was a stupid access denied page, thanks to the damn filters in use at my school.. So, I tried www.mozilla.com. No luck. www.mozilla.org. Nothing. What is a third party site where I can download FF2? I don't think it can have "mozilla", "firefox" or anything like that in the URL, and possibly the entire page. On second thought, I'll just make a new page on my blog, which will just be a download. If you need the URL, email me a aido2002 [at] gmail .com, assuming I can get it set up. I want to get it on my school's computers before I leave it this year. I posted above, with the title "It isn't that simple" because at my College the technicians love Dell Computers and love Internet Explorer even more, but most of the lecturers either carry Portable Firefox (what I do) or just plain install it. However, each time they log off the machine, a stupid program called Clean Slate sets Windows XP back to the default settings, which have also been altered by the technicians, to look like Windows 2000, which they think is faster and better (the only thing I agree on with them).

What the techs in our place don't realise is that they cause more problems than they solve, like the stupid advertising bots THEY install, and then at other times they just sit on their arse doing nothing (and I should know, I spent a week's work experience with them, and I already knew how to do what they showed me, and more) In fact on numerous occasions I sorted problems that they had ballsed up in the first place, and still do for a variety of reasons.

The amount of memory you gain from running Windows XP on a Classic interface amounts to, lets see, about 2Meg. But the OS loses that in huge memory leaks and what junk people puts on it.

The memory you gain from running Windows 2000 is more like 20-30 Megs, and its better and cheaper. Why don't they just run 2000? Because they said it was crap. I nearly stormed out the room when they said that.

And believe me it would take hours to convince a normal teacher (meaning not an IT teacher) to use it I love the idea through it is not very successful if not done well

I hope by next year it will be on all computers and fixed.

(Plus on the school laptops)

And check this cool firefox thing I made:

Here you can find good hints on creating logon scripts to do the hard work automatically for you:

http://www.rlmueller.net/LogonScriptFAQ.htm

With a logon script you can automatically install Firefox, if it is not installed, change the default settings, set up the Desktop icon and eventually delete the logon script afterwards.

If you have access to Windows Group Policies, you can easily manage all aspects of Firefox settings:

http://firefoxadm.sourceforge.net/

About not using Firefox: you could rename the Internet Explorer shortcut to "Old Internet Explorer" and change the icon and the name of the Firefox shortcut to "Internet Explorer".

You could pull a switcheroo. Rename Internet Explorer as "Mozilla Firefox" and rename Firefox as "Internet Explorer". So, when they come to investigate, they'll uninstall WIE instead of Firefox! Life is sweet...

Could someone delete the bottom post? I put that there by mistake.

That's why so many people are just plain sick of it. It is forced onto your computer, but because its such a mess, Bill Gates removed the uninstaller. And now ~80% of the computing world uses it because it is illegally welded onto the OS.

Removal can be done, but is hard :

Well I have tried, but it isn't working!!

First of all, I am too afraid to run Firefox Portable on school computers. it isn't allowed and there is another rule also.

Also, I have written several letters to the IT department of the school board requesting Firefox to be installed. I never got a reply from any of the 4 letters I sent.

Once I get into high school, I will get Firefox into those computers!

And I can tell you. On my school's computers, nothing gets deleted, only the shortcuts and stuff get reset. I had to install it as a portable version to remove the system one, and then to remove another program that was infesting one of the other computers. As usual, Firefox saves the day! (Even if it means removing itself)

P.S. I sent a letter to my librarian to tell her about Firefox.

I can't even use Firefox Portable because they disabled all devices except the mouse...

Do you not know how to get around those school block, it really easy. Just use the command prompt to start it (start [insert flash dive letter here]:). And if the command prompt is blocked just go into the system files and find the program that says command.exc instead of using the CMD.exc

PS - If the C drive is blocked use the notepad or wordpad to open the C drive in the windows explorer, that way you can find the command.exc

I've been messing with school computer setting since 1st grade lol, its weird im in high school now and all the teacher I know, when there computers break the ask me to fix it instead of getting the school tech.

Only think I havent learned to do yet is redirect a program exc file so when you click to open it it will open something else..... as in when someone goes to open IE it opens firefox instead. <- Anyone know how to do that?

I fixed computers all the time in my school for people, but I'm interested, I've not heard of an extension ".exc", the closest match I can think of is ".exe" and you mentioned opening the C:\ Drive from NOtepad? Is that a batch file or is it like typing "C:\start ." in command prompt, which opens C:\ Drive in Explorer?

You can redirect a program shortcut, like the one of IE, to open any program you like.

Take a shortcut, in the location box simply type "Iexplore" (no quotes) and complete the shortcut. Double clicking it reveals an "e" icon and opens Microsoft Internet Exploiter. However, you simply edit the shortcut to point to wherever Firefox is (like C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\Firefox.exe) and hit enter. You can even use the shell to keep the icon as an "e", and rename it "INternet Explorer".

In the shortcut properties, just change the target to firefox.exe and then the symbol back to iexplore.exe.

But its not a shortcut its directly links to it through the server so there is no right click settings to change it. What i wanted to do is go in the programs file and directly change the actually iexplorer.exc and make it so it auto redirects to firefox.exc then someone trys to open it it from the link on the novell screen.

...and get suspicious. Also, if it's on the desktop, you need to rename it to "Internet Explorer", not iexplore.exe. "iexplore" will also make them suspicious.

TweakUI, available for Windows 95, 98, 2000 and XP in different versions allows you to tweak much of the Windows interface. I use it in Windows 2000 on both my computers to take the "shortcut" arrow and "Shorcut to..." text from shortcuts. I also use it to disable any trace of Internet Explorer or Active Desktop, rather than completely removing IE and sacrificing functionality.
