Browser War Checkers (Game)

Browser War Checkers is a new game where you have to help Firefox win against Internet Explorer. It's pretty difficult but quite addictive. Make sure you read the rules of the game and what to do if you get unresponsive script messages.

A special thanks goes to Jamey Boje for making the graphics and Ken Saunders for his assistence.

Enjoy the game and don't let playing it stop you from spreading Firefox!

Well, the AI engine is not so bad.

It's always a balance that you need to find, you can make a checkers program that is simply unbeatable. But it wouldn't be any fun to play...  and when it's not challenging enough it's not fun either.

Yep.
I think that there is some unbeatable solution for the checkers game, but it is based not only on AI engine, but also on the database of final states with the exact steps in order to win each one of them. I believe that you do not have such DB.
By the way, I see that you have changed the rules of the regular checkers game. Is that just to deploy it faster?

You are right, there's no end-game database. The computer is not aggressive enough at the end in my opinion.

As for the rules, I am not sure what you mean with "regular" rules. There are actually quite a lot of different rules, so I had to choose one set of rules, and I chose the US/UK version as it seems to be the most widely used on the Internet. In Holland, my native country, it's played differently.

Thankfully the rules I chose are slightly easier to implement and get quicker reactions from the computer.

Why Would You Want It Unbeatable? What Fun Would That Be?

IE Has A New Logo That Was Made for IE 7. Here is a Transparent PNG:

You May Want To Change The Checkers to Match The Logo.
Here's A Transparent Image for the Scoreboard:

IE7 isn't officially out yet, so we may keep this on ice until then...

But Shouldn't you start to work on the graphics? IE 7 Beta 3 is the final beta before the finished product.

The logo we use is still the most recognized symbol for IE, at this time. This is precisely what it is supposed to do, be a representation of IE.

A time will come that the new logo is recognized more (when most people will see that on their desktops). This will probably still be quite some time after the official release of IE7.

And I certainly don't want to be a part of Microsoft's promotion machine, by promoting their new logo ahead of time or suggesting that a new version is coming out. I rather make IE look old, dull and boring...

You Should Change The Thumbnail To Match The New Logo:

I don’t understand why you’d want to change the logo to a product that hasn’t been fully released yet.
A lot of effort went into choosing the graphics for the game. Actually, it took a few weeks to a month to get the graphics just right, that’s when Jamey came to the rescue.
I’m sure that the checker piece will be updated, but for now, I just don’t see it as necessary.
And remember that IE7 won’t be available to everyone. I still have many visitors that use 98 and even 95. Plus there are visitors who believe it or not use IE5.

The Answer is Simple. Internet Explorer 7 is on it's 3rd (and final) beta testing phase and it will be released to the public soon. It will then be announced as a "Critical Update" and MANY users will download it. We Should Atleast Change The IE Logo Ahead Of Time So That When That Happens We Will All Be Ready.

You’re an excellent supporter of Firefox and SFx, and I never thanked you for adding my site’s button on your site (thank you), so I’ll make a compromise and suggest to Otto that he use the following graphic to truly represent IE.

But That Graphic won't work. It's Not Transparent so it can't be used to create all the images. Here's a transparent (.png) version I Just Made from The Image You Provided:

It Should Make It Easier To Create The Images.
Also, You're Welcome for the link. You Have A lot of great Firefox Content.

Yes, though yesterday I managed to win 4 times, while IE won 4 times and we tied once. But usually I manage to win just one out of 3 games.

I mailed an online newspaper and they picked it up and mentioned it in their gaming section: nu.nl/yoshe

According to my stats two thirds of those visitors used IE and I noticed that my SFx points shot up!

This kind of made my day!

Great job Otto.
