Rating Idea

Ever since SFX was redesigned, and the rating system changed, it seems like the number of blogs being rated has gone down,  Maybe it just seems that way because the end user does not see the stats, or maybe in part due to the design.  I think the stars could be redrawn to be less ambiguous. Instead of having all the stars the same color and size why not gradually make them bigger and have the rating you are giving appear in a different color?

Example:

The rating you want to give it would be a brighter color, and the lower ratings would be darker and smaller stars.

Now that I am looing at it maybe it would be better to have the outlined stars in black and white from smallest to biggest, and on hover, they would be invisible and replaced by your rating.

Let me know what you think... at the very least I think making the stars scale in size would make someone more likely to click and in the right spot.

I rate every post I see, but I think it'd be much better incentive if people were actually given points based on the rankings of their posts.

Think about it people. This is the kind of thing that can keep FireFox free and even fund development. If the people at FireFox can make money from advertisers by returning anonymos rating statistics from web banners and ads it would do great things for the brouser and all it's plug-in development. Let's give this some serious thought because that means advancements beyond what is already a really great brouser...

Bad idea.... I really hate those ratings things.

I don't think that you can easily change the fact taht some people rate every post they read and some just don't. I think that the images chould be changed, though, to a firefox logo. We are Spread Firefox, after all. People won't get any more confused over this than with the star, especially because it says "Rating" right over the stars. Maybe also change the text to "Rate this post" or something that sounds more like an active command.

 My quick little idea:

(A rating of 3 out of 5)

I like this idea and we should do it however like Jan Steffen said people will click the big one i think they should be bigger, but all the same size, and labled either above or below the star

I have to agree, that the current voting system is not really great: You need to have flash installed, you don't know what the stars mean until you hover over them.
Not enough readers voting at all is a big problem for an otherwise very active community as sfx.

What I don't like so much at your idea is the different size of the stars. People tend to click on the biggest icon and so the voting will be biased. I prefer votings systems with a psoitive/negative rating system. Perhaps I liked the old voting system (the drop down list) most.

Great idea!

seems to me that the ratings system is ok as it is; 1 to 5 stars, low to high points, it isn't exactly hard.  Information on a web page, a paper page, or a blog should be confined to information, and not enhanced with fancy graphics. Unless you can incorporate the Simpsons in there somewhere.......

Good idea, but I'm not sure its totally necessary. Do people need to be encouraged to leave ratings? hm

... but it appears to be how the "Top Posts" get positioned... looking at  what is up there reminds me of a certain national video store chain - every time I go there I see several videos that I would have removed from the "New Release" section a long time ago!

Didn't think of that
