Tracking My Topics

Posted by HackerOfMinds on Sun, 12/04/2005 - 09:17SFX Design Issues

Today, I saw one of my posts was overflowing with comments which
demanded my reply, and I saw this only just now - after about 5 days
passed with no replies from me. Who knows how many similar posts are
there, which you had previously commented,  and then forgot -
eventhough you are still interested in the topic.

I saw this neat method used in Google Groups. When we sign-in, the first page will show a list called 'New posts in topics I have posted'. This will be very helpful if implemented at SFx, as the list of 'active topics' is very short, and it is difficult to track topics.

Maybe SFx Admins could do something about it? The Google Groups implementation seems good. Or perhaps, SFx could mail a reminder when somone posts as 'reply' to your post??

An similar problem at sfx is the really bad search funktionality. I usually use google with the site funktion if I'm looking for something at sfx. If you search for your username or signature, you find your threads quite fast. Ken Saunders made a nice page for this.

Searching for this thread...

Google for "Tracking topics": first hit. Sfx-search: not under the first 100 hits :-(

Sounds like a neat feature, for now are you aware you can click on "my blog" and see all your recent posts, then scroll down and see if any posts are donoted as having a " # new comments" link at the bottom of them?

Two days later this thread is gone from the start page and no one will ever read it :-( So I just post a new comment... ;-)

Perhaps we could implement not only "View recent blog entries" for a user, but also "View recent forum entries" and "View recent comments".

I hate it not to be able to find the discussions I participated in. Many good ideas get lost like that.

You are totally right. It is a really a PITA sometimes to find a topic again after some days. There should absolutly be a kind of watch-list for interesting threads. Like for

  • Threads I posted in
  • Postings I gave a good rating
  • Posts (or comments) from users I'm interested in
  • Things I want to check back later

I'm sure this would be immensly helpful for all users and make sfx much more effective.

No worries, I forgot it too. :D

I'm starting to use a folder in my bookmarks for SFX posts I want to keep an eye on, which works okay, but it won't if I get a large number there. Something built into SFX would be nice.

I'm starting to use the "email me new replies to this thread" feature on different forums now. Maybe that could be considered. MozillaZine seems to be able to handle the load, so SFX should be able to too.

I'd be waiting on your comment in that thread if I could find it! ;) I feel the same exact way - Spread Firefox could use some way for forgetful people like me to track our posts.

These are all good comments and feedback and ones that we take on board moving forward in our site development plan.

One of the main problem areas with this site is indeed the "blog" structure, you will soon see a move away form this into a "project"
and "group" structure that will be more "productive" in terms of coordinating "action".

Thanks again for the feedback ideas, they fit in nicely with our user dashboard plans
