A Copy of Fire/Thunder With Every PC

Posted by JoeSmack on Tue, 09/14/2004 - 16:28College Reps

Hi everyone. Glad as hell you're all here. I don't know what being a college rep entails, but me, I've been trying myself to help the cause for a while. I work at my campus bookstore, which also doubles as the campus computer store. I help sell computers to just about every freshman who doesn't want to pay for shipping of their computer, so many just buy em when they get to school.

_Every_ PC I see someone get, I tell them about Firefox and Thunderbird, as well as a spyware checker. I've gotten to the point where I've made little fliers to hand to people with links and reasons to get them. Most people are warm to the suggestion when told why they are better, and I'm glad there is one more safe computer out there.

Keep it up guys. I know I won't quit.

hi! i go to the university of nevada, reno and i was wondering how receptive the rest of your co-workers in the computer shop are to you speaking up about the mozilla products. i'm going to head down to our shop and talk to the guys there, and i just kinda want to know a possible reaction i might get!

i like the flier idea, i was thinking about just burning a few dozen cds with firefox, thunderbird, and adaware and spybot. maybe some other free software that gets used day to day.

Well, the my fellow co-worker couldn't be happier. He is a big fan of Mozilla/Firefox too. In fact, its reception was very good all over. My boss thought it was a great idea. Heck, I even called the department that handles the campus connection, and they were really stoked on it. In fact, it was originally going to be just Firefox and Ad-aware, and they suggested I throw in Thunderbird too (good call).

I thought myself about burning lots of CDs with stuff like FF and Thunderbird and spyware removal stuff. Even stuff like Open CD as previously proposed. In the end I think that people will learn a bit more and know what they are doing if they go to each website and download it themselves and see how easy it is! :)

Let people know!

The open CD is /the/ free killer CD brimfull of OSS software, ready for distributing.
You might want to hand them a cd with that too. So that they can easily (few clicks) install OO.org, the gimp, etcetc

I really really wish I could but we get the PCs from Dell, and the end-user _has_ to order them online themselves. We don't even see the box, they deliver it to their house or their dorms.

Still, most people who come in really appreciate any computer advice as most who buy a computer or ask about buying a computer on this campus aren't usually advanced users; I'd say more often than not they listen to our advice. I even get people calling the store afterwards to ask for the name of Firefox or the URL for it.

Anyways, I've got the flier image sitting at work, and I could post it if anyone knows of a hunk of webspace that wouldn't fold as soon as it gets mobbed with people. It's small; a fourth page flier.

Keep going everyone, 1 million in 10 days!

Anyone have any suggestions on improvements? These are doing great, but I could always make them better. Keep in mind there is limited space for wording and URLs etc.

Feel free to use them though however you want! :D

P.S. Thanks to LogicX for hosting! :)

Try contacting the mozilla foundation to see if they can host it for you. Otherwise you could just put it on some free webspace and encourage people to mirror it.

That's great to hear, keep up the good work!

One thing that'd be even better is if you can get Firefox installed on the machines before you sell them, but I know that's not your decision. Are the people who run the store firefox friendly?

...and I have to say it again, keep up the good work :)
