London Metro on IE Security
This letter found in the London Metro's Wednesday 21st Edition. Article Below:
"It is with some concern and amusement that I read about the Microsoft chief security adviser Ed Gibson's forecast of doom in which spam and viruses could wreck the Internet within 5 years (Metro, Mon). It is, in fact, the poor quality of Microsoft's own software which is the cause of most of the virus infections and spam from hijacked computers. Internet Explorer inparticular has been, from its first version, particularly bad in the security field and, because Microsoft has taken steps to integrate the browser so deeply into the operating system, this makes the whole of Windows vulnerable. Anti-Virus software simlpy treats the symptons, not the cause of the disease.
The best advice Mr.Gibson could give to Windows users is to upgrade to another browser such as Firefox, and not use IE at all. Even better would be to switch the whole OS to Linux; users who have done this are virtually immune to windows viruses and do not suffer from spyware infections, as well as benefitting from lower costs of ownership.
It is the continuing dominance of Windows and the aggressive tactics of Microsoft's marketting which actually pose the greatest threat to the future of the internet"
Andrew Stringer, Coventry
I am amused for one that Microsoft themselves say "upgrade to firefox" as well as them saying the Internet will all be doom and gloom... It won't be if they got their act together!
