MTV endorses IE instead of Firefox

Posted by Dj KiLLaZ on Mon, 08/29/2005 - 09:33Firefox Press

Just checked out the Digg
website and found that MTV
website endorses users to use IE instead of Firefox
to run the “MTV
Overdrive.” It says…

Detecting Browser…

WE’RE SORRY!

PC Users with Netscape, Mozilla, or Firefox: you need to run Internet
Explorer to use MTV Overdrive.

(IE button)

…And I thought that MTV is so fashionable. I guess I was wrong. So what
do we do about this?

Keep spreading... Get Firefox!

Mtv and Microsoft are collaborating with "Urge".  (Urge to throw up?)

Microsoft are going to try to use DRM to destroy the competition.

Do you think that it is a coincidence that Mtv doesn't support any of Microsoft's competitors?

Boycott Mtv.  Boycott Urge.  Boycott IE and Windows Media Player (and Windows if you can).  There are alternatives.

Detecting OS...

In order to offer
a broad selection of full-length music videos on-demand and free of
charge, MTV Overdrive uses Windows Digital Rights Management (DRM) to
protect videos from unauthorized re-distribution.

Unfortunately,
Microsoft's Windows Media Player Plug-in for Unix does not support
Windows DRM. If DRM support becomes available, MTV will develop a
version of MTV Overdrive that works for your operating system.

 ----------

DRM? lmao... anyone who uses that is stupid anyway. And, btw MTV, there will (should) never be a DRM module for *nix systems....we dont use Windows for a reason.

And if you think that is bad, check out the graphic you get with a Mac!

You would think that a lot of their customers would be using Macs!  And even if you are using Windows they also require Windows 2000 or XP. People still use Windows 98!

(of course they mean Digital RESTRICTIONS Managment they sure as heck arn't protecting OUR rights in any way)

It has too many system requirements and you get nothing but crappy on demand programming in return.  Aside from needing IE you also need a screen resolution of 1024x768 and broadband.  Not to mention the whole thing is done in Macromedia Flash.  When will people learn that websites made entirely of Flash suck.  Overdrive along with VH1 Vspot and the other things done by Comedy Central and Nickelodeon are just cheap advertising tactics.

MTV was never one of the things that I concern myself with anyway for reasons that I shall hold back to not offend anybody.

Nice signatue...I agree with most of it. Firefox really isn't better than PHP or MySQL, but I couldn't live without either one of them...so it doesn't matter which is best, they're all essential to life.

MTV has a contract with Microsoft with the music store...why wouldn't they endorse MSFT's products?

How did you put that Fx banner directly on your msn space? I only know how to put them in my blog posts. Could you teach me?

FireFox will now work, but they do still promote IE.

Firefox will work if you install the ActiveX plugin, but who wants to do that?

What?
How are they still promoting IE? I don't see buttons linking to an IE
download. What the heck are you talking about? Why do you suddenly get
to determine what software they are supporting? Your statement is
unfounded and most likely untrue. Overdrive uses ActiveX scripting.
Many sites do. Its not an endorsement in any way, its simply a use of a
programming language that most other browsers don't happen to be able
to use.

Anyways, they still suck for using ActiveX, 100% Flash, and simply being MTV.

Using a proprietary technology that has security issues and noone really likes IS endorsing the proprieter. There's no other reason to use something like that.

MTV used to be good in the 90's when they played good music videos, but now they moved on to realilte showes.

ActiveX isn't bad, it's hreat actually, makes great interactive websites, and so does Flash, i use Flash myself when making websites for other buisnesses.  But ActiveX like mostly anything else on websites have drawbacks.  It can act as a way to send Spyware and blah blah to a user.  You can use the ActiveX control that it tells you to download, or you can't, its your perogative.  But i hate IE as much as anyone, but don't take it out on MTV, who i also hate, just because they like kool looking, interactive designs!!
