Upgrade your Firefox!

Then I look at the browser statistics from my website, it looks like people is too busy spreading FF, and forget to keep their own FF up to date, since 95%+ of the trafic on my FF site comes from this site.

  • August 2005
    14,410 hits from FF users
    • 66.89% - Firefox 1.0.6
    • 2.00% - Firefox 1.0.5
    • 10.42% - Firefox 1.0.4
    • 0.79% - Firefox 1.0.3
    • 0.57% - Firefox 1.0.2
    • 0.95% - Firefox 1.0.1
    • 17.55% - Firefox 1.0
  • July 2005
    525,852 hits from FF users
    • 19.49% - Firefox 1.0.6
    • 11.17% - Firefox 1.0.5
    • 49.26% - Firefox 1.0.4
    • 3.57% - Firefox 1.0.3
    • 2.60% - Firefox 1.0.2
    • 2.19% - Firefox 1.0.1
    • 10.18% - Firefox 1.0

When I look at the graph below, I get the picture, that it isn't just the users of this site, but a more general pattern. If everybody had upgraded the jump after the release of 1.0.6, should be a little bit bigger, than the one after 1.0.4, instead it is only about the half.

I will encourage everyone who is still running a deprecated version of Firefox to upgrade immediately.

I have an idea to get people to upgrade. Have FF send the user to a webpage that notifies them that they need to update their browser. FF 0.8 did that to me when Mozilla found a major sercuity error in the browser or their Mozilla Update site. It got my attention.
I don't remember if I got this message logging on to the Mozilla Update page or starting FF.

I ended up in this forum like many other dedicated users. I wanted to upgrade quickly...
I looked under the Help command in the 'Toolbar' first.
Perchance that is the place to add an "Upgrade" button/command.
Right after the "Promote" button/command.
Just another idea for you.
Keep up the great work!
Pomian.

Isn't there an icon in the upper right corner for updates? (Next to the activity icon.)
My FF 1.0.4 version on my USB drive has a red ! for a critical update. When I click on it, it wants to download FF 1.0.6.

By the way I am using Deer Park now and it works great. Go ahead and try it

One reason I haven't upgraded from 1.0.4 is I am using a dail-up connection and upgrading takes a long time because I also need to upgrade my extensions.
The second is I have upgraded before and then FF didn't support my favorite plug-ins.

I have not upgraded because each time I attempt an upgrade I watch the little rotating icon for some period of time but nothing appears to happen! I am on broadband and there are no indicators of activity on the LED's

Goto getfirefox.com and download the newest version.

And for everyone else:
I am finally downloading Deerpark to try out. :)

My guess is that some schools needs to upgrade now holidays are over (and admins need to do this), and how about localisations? I saw that our finnish 1.0.4 was not asking for an update, even after I checked...

The average person that has Firefox doesn't know how to upgrade. Most likely SFXer's do know how to upgrade. Somehow we need to tell that average person how to upgrade. (i know i didn't word this very well)

New users just do not get the red arrow in the corner. You have to enducate the user about the update.

I have no idea if this is going to be changed in Ff1.5, but maybe its something that needs to be added in the 5 minute challenge (and then provide that link to people when they install).

Anyway good to pull some attention to this.

It's not going to be easy to include "update your browser" into the challenge - unless you install an outdated version first ;-)

With August two thirds over, I would predict that the number of hits by Firefox on your site has dropped by about 95% :-O
You sure that the stats are correct?

btw, if you do these kinds of stats, you could include a decent hint to "outdated visitors" that their Firefox needs an update.
Anyone interested in a PHP snippet for this task? I could post mine (as I do not find the thread/blog anymore where it was discussed on sfx.com).

You can put this in an .htaccess file:

 BrowserMatchNoCase Firefox/0 OldFirefox

 BrowserMatchNoCase Firefox/1\.0$ OldFirefox

 BrowserMatchNoCase Firefox/1\.0\.[1-5] OldFirefox

And then put this in yout .shtml page:

 <!--#if expr="${OldFirefox}" -->

  Hey! Ugrade Firefox!

 <!--#else -->

  Something else

 <!--#endif -->

I will such a box later today or some time tomorrow.

The reason to the big drop in visitors is that my graph was on the main page, of SFX, in mid July. And linked to by other sites like osnews.com, about the 75 million milestone. And this is my first blog post this month.

Maybe it is Firefox 1.0+ (nightly builds, including Deer Parks).

i think alot of people downloaded FIREFOX 1.0 and just thought that was it...they're used to IE coming out with something new once every eon...and aren't expecting anything new yet from FIREFOX...another thing to remember...some may not know how to update...they just download a program amidst all the hoopla when it first comes out...and just use it as is...forever.

the only way people are to learn of firefox updates is that stupid icon in the top right hand corner - its not the most noticeable thing.

Submitted by Silver on Wed, 08/24/2005 - 18:43.

There could also be a pop up that appears when a new update is ready (which could be turned off, I hope) so as to remind people that upgrades exist.

Bring on 1.5 :) DP2 has a really nice new updates system (If you want to get it enabled, ask google) which makes things a lot easier, as well as issuing binary patches instead of full installs. The system is very noticable and alerts you through new window when new updates arrive.

But now, how can we get people to switch to 1.5?
