But isn't it true that IE doesn't like PNG?
We may get more users to switch from IE if the logos look good ;)

IE7 finally has full PNG support.  But IE6 and older can only support binary transparency in 8-bit PNGs -- functionally equivalent to a GIF.

Which logos do you mean?  As far as I know, the logos on the Mozilla site use PNG.  You can also download in a single ZIP file various Firefox PNG logos from Mouserunner.com, here

I agree.

In every aspect (except file size), PNG is superior to both GIF and JPG.

When you think about it, PNG is the best of all three worlds (BMP pixel perfect clairity, GIF transparancy, JPG color support).

Not to mention the royalty issue (though who follows that anyway?)

But what are you referring to? The FF logos available for download?

GIF was using a patent, for which Unisys tried to collect royalties from sites that use it ($5000 per site). See burnallgifs.org. However the patent has now expired.

PNG has been patent free from the start.

Similarly MP3 is also patented and every device using it has to pay for the patent. The alternative, Ogg is an open standard which is free of patents and has a better quality.

Only thing is that half the free world is still on IE, and when they surf and see a .png, it's not transparent to them. I'm having that problem on my website. I ended up having to use .gif Just so it doesn't look stupid when your using IE.

I think you can use a javascript: if visitor's browser if not Firefox but is an old Ie version (not 7) you insert a gif else you insert png.

Else if you want you can use png without transparent areas
