75,000,000

Congratulations, today we have reached 75,000,000 downloads. The download was made 13:17:10 CEST.

Here are some facts to help you with a understanding of this huge number:

  • 25% of the US population
  • Over 2 times the population of Canada
  • 50% of the Russian population
  • 16% of the population in the European Union
  • 60% of the Japanese population
  • 6% of the Chinese population

Thats 25,000,000 more downloads in less than 3 months, after the 50 million downloads milestone in April. The 100 million downloads milestone isn't that far away

We must be very careful not to confuse downloads with Firefox users.

While the first may be measured exactly (the way we do it), the latter is hard to impossible to measure and one must note in particular that the correlation between downloads and users is very unprecise at best.
I won't go into that again, it may be off in both directions.

On other sites I hear the counter being criticized as "innaccurate" and "meaningless", and that's partly because of us failing to transport the correct meaning of the counter.
Even getfirefox.com does so by stating "Join more than 75 million others..." which is not totally incorrect but gives the wrong impression.

75 million does not mean that 75 million individual people downloaded Firefox, but rather that the product was downloaded 75 million times.
This is a small but important difference.

So, we should not compare the number with populations or the like but rather with the amount of BMWs produced, Hamburgers sold in the same timeframe, Opera-downloads and things like these.

All of the hard work put in by each of the members here have contributed greatly to reaching this milestone. We all have a lot to be proud of by helping Firefox reach 75 million downloads. This is truly a great feat. Congrats to the Mozilla staff, the members of the SFX community, and all others involved in promoting a better browser.

I have just my time, because I just had the download count from before and after. My prediction was some hours too early.
