We at Firemonger need your support!

Posted by komencanto on Tue, 05/31/2005 - 13:03Spreading Firefox

EDIT: I have elaborated on some of the ideas expressed here in another far more expansive post if you are interested in the issue.

The team over at www.firemonger.org has been hard at work improving the forum, homepage and getting translations out. So far Spanish and German are done, but French should be out soon. Despite the fact that our product is better than ever (try it for yourself, I'm sure you'll feel inspired to pass it on to your friends!), because our link was removed from spreadfirefox.com when the site was redesigned a bit, our visitor numbers have dropped quite a bit (EDIT: This box has since been reinstated. Thanks a lot whoever did that!).

Because we have all put in quite a lot of effort into making the CD, and the idea originally came out of people mulling over how best to spread firefox on this very site some 8 months ago, I really feel that the first place for us to turn is the huge userbase right here. The first thing you can do is to download the CD, try it out and give it to your friends. It's great, and if you have any ideas for other extensions or indeed anything, we make it really easy to contact us through our forums (no registration required) or just to email us direct. I'm sure there are lots of improvements that people can think of that wouldn't occur to me!

If you like the CD and are surprised that you hadn't heard about it before, please add your support to getting Firemonger reinstated on spreadfirefox.com, or at least covered on the main page at some point (none of our main releases were unfortunately). As our translations come out we would love to be covered on Mozilla Europe and the various other europe language affiliates. Given that we are currently the only distribution CD for Mozilla products it would be great if we could be mentioned on mozilla.org at some point too. Additionally, if you have any idea for how to get us more visitors and some publicity, then be sure to mention them here. Thanks all.

Thanks to whoever returned the Project box. This is a great piece of common sense and it is good to know you have gotten through to someone. However, it is only a start and much more is needed to make this site better. Read my long open letter for information about this.

It's not much, but put a link to Firemonger on my Firefox blog.

BTW, I'm seeing a link to "Firemonger project" in the "Featured Projects" box right under the FF Download Counter.

ahaha, so glad you designed the 'en' flag banner proerply :) It really annoys me when websites simply use the American flag for suposed 'English'.

Really lame. It's one thing that I actually relate MS to, as MS Outlook email, has/had a huge problem of using the US English dictionary in spell check, even when you tell it EN English.

Similar niggly but big thing - really shows the software/site whatever what exactly the developers are like that.

I'm also one of the developers from the firemonger project and so my vote is definitly for it being on the homepage. As Robert has said, we have put alot of work into this project and we feel it is a quality product. Thank you for all your support so far - it's really encouraging to us. But we need more! We want a landslide ;) Also, we are spreading. Softpedia have added us (we didn't know until the other day!) and voting for us there would be a big help in driving visitors unfamiliar with firfox to our download page (we are currently a "pick", and the more people who give us full marks, the easier we are to find there). This is our softpedia page.
Please vote generously!

The Firemonger project is one of the most solid efforts in sfx and deserves to be in the main page. Some people won't try anything unless it's right in their hands. Handing out free Firemonger CDs is definitively one of the best ways to spread FF as well as TB.

I think it could be added as one of the right-hand green modules. It could say something like "Help distribute Firefox! Make Firemonger CDs for your friends and coworkers and help spread the word".

I agree, that link to Firemonger should be added to the SFX main page.

Firemonger definitely should be added back to the SFX front page as it'll be a useful tool in spreading firefox, not everyone is willing to pay for the official CD to pass around friends (and can't at the moment anyway while the store is down).

There's not much spreading information linked on the front page at the moment which is disappointing

I use Firemonger simply because of all the extensions and themes. Have you considered putting all of this in a zipped folder and just let people download that, so all Firefox things you need is on one disc.

Try putting just FFX things in one zip, and make the file size no bigger than 15mb. Do the same for Thunderbird.

Thank you.

The lite version is only 19mb, but I don't think we'll make another Firefox only thing, although you're welcome to do it yourself and send it over. I'd happily upload it.

Firemonger should undoubtedly be on the homepage, along with many other projects and actual material for spreading firefox. I wrote a post about this in the Sfx forums called Sfx situation. I like quite a few now are struggling to see reason as to why a load of content has disapeared, hardly any projects or actual spread firefox materials are on the homepage, or on the site at all. It's madness and no matter whats going on, for content to be missing for this long is just not right.

The Firemonger project is great, I just recently downloaded the CD! I also pointed it out to someone saying a installer with extensions would be a good idea, I obviously told him yes it is, and its kinda being done. I havent tried it yet, it's not as clear as it could be as to how you use it and how it works though. Are all the extensions installed immediately, with default settings? I'll only comment briefly here and will continue over at the forums, but I think Cute menu 2 and Tab Mix are 2 definitely worth extensions, hopefully this will post will bring on some well needed changes in the benefit of Firefox and its spreading efforts and projects.

Submitted by komencanto on Tue, 05/31/2005 - 22:43.

It's not possible to incorporate the extensions with the installer for legal reasons. I'll mention that on the help page when we add it. What isn't clear about how you use it? Do you think we need instructions saying open index.html if you have unzipped? I'll check otu Cute menu 2. We already ahve Tabbrowser preferences for the more 'entry level' user but I'll add a mention of Tab Mix at the bottom of that entry for the poeple who want more power. Perhaps you could post this in the suggestions forum?
