25 million in 99 days: Do you all ever sleep?

Posted by jamey on Wed, 02/16/2005 - 21:14Spreading Firefox

On February 15th, exactly 99 days after it was released, Firefox 1.0 smashed through the 25 million download  milestone.

25 million download

Thank you.

Thank you for helping us take this product from 25 to 25 million, from our little corner of the world to yours, from the technically elite to Karen and Rimone.

With a minimal set of tools—an affiliate system, a small donations fundraising system, blogs, galleries, forums, and the good old human larynx—you all are spreading Firefox to a quarter of a million people a day. More than 500,000 sites now link to Firefox according to Google—a fivefold increase from six months ago.

What was just a small flame 100 days ago has since exploded into a phenomenal demonstration of the power of open source. Tens of thousands of devoted users and fans are a powerful and capable force of change. We have created a special commemorative image if you would like to mark this milestone on your own site.

In celebration of this 25 million downloads milestone, and in celebration of each and every one of you, the Mozilla Store is offering a 25% discount on Firefox t-shirts, polo shirts (non-launch), plush toys and hats. This discount is available now and will last until 11:59 PM EST on Thursday, February 17.

As an additional "token" of our appreciation, we are also pleased to announce that the kind folks over at CoinsForAnything have offered to provide us with 100 free collectors' coins to commemmorate this milestone in Internet history. We have provided a mockup above of how these coins will look. We will be awarding a quarter of these coins to the top 25 most active SpreadFirefox members, where "most active" is defined by the number and quality of the member's posts (as rated by the community), how many comments he's posted, whether or not he has engaged the community by rating other users' posts, and how much affiliate traffic he has generated for Firefox. We have placed much greater emphasis on how a member has helped grow the sfx community than on how much traffic he has sent to Firefox.

If you made the "most active" list, you will be notified later this week via e-mail or (if you did not provide us with the address) private message on SpreadFirefox.

The remaining 75 coins will be distributed according to a different set of criteria over the coming weeks, so if you don't get an e-mail but feel like you should have, don't despair.

Thanks again for your tireless efforts, and many thanks to CoinsForAnything for supporting our community. Onward to 50 million!

The new graphic, while spiffy, has broken the ability to include it on our own pages.

A lot of people have asked for the ability to reuse the counter on their own website. The old graphic was trimmed enough so that if you fudged the text really big, it didn't look TOO out of place. The new one is oversized with a lot of transparent whitespace and can't be used in that manner anymore.

So I put out the request (again): can we have SOME graphic or includable text so that we can use the current counter figure on our own advocacy sites? Please??? Thanks :)

That's actually a really good idea. I like that. (Obviously I'm biased since I know I have no chance what-so-ever at getting it "officially"0 .. lol.) But maybe we should keep it simple.. It's either going to have to go to the top 25 as judged, or they're going to have to go to eBay or something else. I don't see any inbetweens on this one.

Most gnu/linux browser are based on gecko and I don't think there is a lot to fight in linux.

All gnu/linux distros post a patch for the recent bug report related to idn (disable idn).

windows users could use iexplore.exe without idn, but probably won't use firefox.

A simple patch in 99 days is a bad sponsor? or it is good?

Gnu/Linux users are well supported, and I want all user switch to gnu, but they probably have some problem with other programs.

I just wish Firefox would work with the 9.x macs, as my school has about 100 or so of them, all SCREAMING for the chance to use Firefox. I have convinced some of my teachers, using some of the more later powerbooks or in some classrooms, dell pcs, to switch to firefox.

I never thought of registering to get a spread firefox ID.. now that they're giving out coins, I wish I had :( Hope to buy a similar copy in the future, that would be an excellent collectors item :D

I second that! If you all decide to sell reasonably priced collectors coins I would be willing to purchase one. How about making 100 "special" ones for the top active people and then also selling them in a slightly different form?

If you're not interested in doing it I would be more then happy to setup a part of the site to sell them and take care of it for you :)

And I don't have any offer for coins, but that's not why I started Firefox Materials in the first place. I have no idea who won, but I hope they post a list of users and how their work got them rewarded. I'd find it interesting to see what kinda great things earned people commemorative coins. Congrats the 75!

Edit: Now I see, 25 to the most active, and then 75 to the people who helped out with quality over quantity. I still have a chance :)

I really can't understand why list is not published (unless the reason is that list does not exist yet). If they wanted to give coins according to special criteria, they have 75 coins for that, it would be foolish not to follow rules for other 25.

As important as downloads are to spreading Firefox, during the recent summit by the admin team, we came up with a new strategy moving forward. You can expect more details about it soon -- rather than focus simply on downloads, we want to turn the spotlight on all the amazing projects out there spreading Firefox.

Will there be a campaign to hit 50 million downloads? We're not sure yet. If there is, we'll be sure to make a nice big announcement.
