Browser Stats on AsianWeek.com

Need to watch Microsoft Office Online closely

http://www.news.com/Microsoft-Office-heads-to-the-Web/2100-1012_3-6210696.html?tag=nefd.lede

Microsoft builds their Web applications for Internet Explorer, usually optimized for IE, and sometimes exclusively for IE.

An online version of Microsoft Office needs to be compatible with popular browsers, Firefox and Safari and the pressure needs to be put on them (by us) to make sure it happens.

Browser Market Share Doc and Web Standards Matrix doc

I've started a couple documents and I would love help. Email me at rebron@gmail.com if you'd like to collaborate.

Web Browser Market Share

http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pz8fwNCfw0h2JzuBDDgE_Tg&gid=0

We'll need a contact from some top sites to fill in the blanks for us and get permission for their data. Some of the other sites they can fill-in themselves and would love to get more sites added to this list.

Web Browser Standards Matrix

http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pz8fwNCfw0h1QJinrfy5aQw

This one is still early. But I think it would be useful for developers to definitively know the difference between the different browser implementations of the different web standards.

I've seen some tables, but I think a SpreadSheet might do a better job.

I used to be an accountant so I like spreadsheets, and this Google SpreadSheets app is pretty cool.

Learning more about marketing

One of the goals of SpreadFirefox when we first started the project was to create a marketing project that matched the technical excellence of the engineering teams. We're not exactly there yet and I think we all would still like to move forward with this goal. I'd like to anyway.

I'm not a marketing expert but would like to be, and would like to learn more about building a brand, maintaining a brand, messaging, and other technical aspects of marketing.

I can imagine that some of the engineers might think that marketing is all fun and games and is fluffy advertising and conferences and handing out stickers. But there's a whole lot more to it than that, it's a lot more numbers oriented and strategy than people think.

Anyhow, would love people's thoughts on this and how we could get started. Maybe a discussion on the 4 P's of marketing and starting there.

a SpreadFirefox Marketing Knowledgebase

You know what would be really cool is a SpreadFirefox Marketing Knowledgebase. There's certain metrics and numbers that everyone in the industry could benefit from, number of total internet users, broadband adoption, screen resolution for web pages etc.

It could be done as a wiki and would be a neat resource. It's somewhat similar to the Firefox Dashboard project which is really cool, but would be general web stats versus Firefox specific.

I think this would be helpful for not only the mozilla project but for lots of people.

I Spy Firefox

So I saw Firefox being used by the office manager at Charm City Cakes on tv the other day. Chef Duff and his team are on the show "Ace of Cakes" on the FoodTV network.

This could be a cool game, spotting Firefox on tv. We started it a while back with the tv show Supernatural. But we kind of had a hand in that one where we product placed a Firefox stuffed animal in one of the scenes. That was neat.

But, folks are on their own starting to use Firefox as the browser of choice for their tv commercials and then every once in a while catch someone using Firefox as part of reality tv.

I wonder what's the best way to keep a running tally. Or maybe there's one already being done?

number crunching

Alright! There is interest in number crunching and I think we can be a big service to Mozilla with our number crunching, stat analysis skills.

There are numbers we have (that we have to get from Mozilla Corp folks), there are numbers that are external that we have to gather, there are numbers that off limits (internal only to Mozilla Corp, sensitive because it involves revenues and partners) we have to be mindful and respectful of that.

I'd like to suggest that the first thing we tackle is measuring quality. Let's come up with some quality metrics that we can measure across releases. These are numbers that we can grab from Mozilla and start crunching.

A second thing we can measure is market share (obviously). We need to grab data for this and then start analysing, looking at the trends, see where Firefox is weak in terms of what demographic groups, etc.

Another cool thing we can measure is brand awareness. This one is going to take more work.

Thoughts?

In everything above we need to come up with a proposal document that shows what it is we want to measure, what types of information we need, etc.

statistical analysis for Firefox

Marketing is a broad discipline in business. And usually the promotional side of marketing via advertising and other promotional campaigns is what people think of when people say they're in marketing.

On the meatier side of marketing is statistical analysis and crunching the numbers to optimize one thing or another, whether it's price, market share, users, timing of something whatever it is.

So questions:

Is the number crunching, statistical analysis part of marketing interesting to the Spread Firefox community?

Do we have the people at SpreadFirefox studying marketing/statistical analysis? Or can we go out and find them?

If so, we either need to get numbers or estimate numbers to play with?

What do we measure and analyze?

Maybe using Firefox and Mozilla as a business case study would be a good place to start?

Thoughts? I'm a big fan of number crunching in regards to "marketing". Numbers are crucial to the marketing discipline and gets lost because the more creative side like tag lines and messaging, and logos, takes center stage usually.

learning from campaigns

When we started SpreadFirefox, we took lessons from the Howard Dean campaign and actually worked with the folks at CivicSpace to come up with the SpreadFirefox website and many of it's features. Another example of learning from political campaigns is Firefox Flicks which was our version of the Bush in 30 seconds campaign. It was nice to be able to focus on the positive though.

Well the 2008 election is coming up and I'm going to bet that online campaigning is going to be even more sophisticated than it was several years back.

If folks want to take a look at http://my.barackobama.com/ it would be good to take a run through, see what they're doing and maybe apply some of the things that they're doing to SpreadFirefox (I didn't say vote for the guy, just see what's going on).

I'm not sure what the plans are for the SpreadFirefox.com web site, but we really need to get going on getting it upgraded.
